Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have 2 geodesic domes one is my barn the other is my coop made by Tim Von Flowtow if you search him on facebook you can contact him. he comes out sets them up you have to cover them, we have used tarps. the barn has a 10 x 10 easy up front so I can store my mowers and such

this was starting of the coop frame. I cannot say enough good about what Tim has done here.

Thank you I was not aware of the differences, I was suppose to have them but never happened and I bought 4 barred rocks then 2 Rhode Island reds then the what I have learned are light Brahmas as they are white still kinda young no cones as of yet but I am getting like 6 to 8 eggs daily for the older ones. I did start with all chicks. I am always happy to learn more.
This is how you learn, exactly how you learn, and sounds like you have good birds & they are doing their jobs ! And welcome to BYC!!

I bought my first pair of winter boots in years, more like a hiking boot with fuzz ordering burlap today to run around the coop help keep my girls warm a bit more. laid down a better layer of shavings actually counted my birds I have 5 bards not 4, 2 reds, 6 light Brahmas. First snow here in Mossyrock today.
Interesting deal a friend of mine started doing: He saves all his feed bags, and staples them, layer after layer, to the inside walls of his coopS...and his peeps saty nice & warm !
Also interesting...HE is not too far away from you !
Maybe a few miles toward I-5...

I always make sure that the chickens I get will do well here in this climate. Especially considering I don't put heat or light in the coop. I have nothing against those nice expensive chickens or the people who buy them, to me it's the difference between just wanting a regular old dog that you can get at the Humane Society Versus a well bred dog with certain bloodlines and characteristic made for a specific purpose. Buying breeding stock or a rare breed is different than buying something that's just going to lay some eggs for you and to be a pet.
I love all sorts of animals, and would love to get into raising babies part of it but it's not practical for me at this time in my life. I don't have the time the money or the space. And I would want to do it right.
I actually did order some started pullets from McMurray hatchery. They should be here at the end of this month. And in the spring I will get some baby chicks, probably from either a friend of mine here in town or the feed store. I'm going for a variety of breeds, and egg colors :) To go along with my 218-month-old Wyandottes, The ones coming later this month are three Easter Eggers and one Australorp. In the spring I think I will get at least one more Australorp, maybe barred rock, and I'm not sure what else. I want a chicken that will lay white eggs but is cold hardy but easy to find around here. Any suggestions? I don't know what the general attitude towards "what" chickens is on this forum but A friend of mine has a bunch of mixed breed chickens that are laying eggs and should be ready in the spring.
I admit that I am a little hesitant to get chickens from craigslist, partly because you always hear horror stories about bad situations and partly because there just aren't a lot of them listed in this area.
Craigslist can have ads from very good breeders, and like you said, others off loading old or ill fowl.
Arming yourself with knowledge is a big help, but even then, make sure you quarranteen all new entries to your group flock.
Make sure that most all of your birds are immunized for diseases in your area !
I like McMurry...if what you want is a start, and breakfast, go to them for a start and education.
What I do not care for is "hatcheries" which are justbasically getting rid of birds leftover from hatches in other big hatcheries, they are called "Clearing Houses" and if you order a few different breeds in your order, you may get "chicks" in a vast spread of age...new babies, and maybe some as old as 3 weeks....and imagine what they have been through going from their hatch, to trucked to a different place & then resold & shipped to you.
I am not sure which are clearing Houses.
I know Duane Urch, Glen Drowns, and mcMurry, all hatch and there fore save (and pay attention to) their breeding stock...year by year.
There maybe more, I just don't go there anylonger.
If I want something, I put a line out to the SPPA, ask about the old breeders, and go from there.
BUT
My main favorite, that I have bought year after year (25 to 50 a year) have been McMurry's Plymouth Barred Rocks..............
Living up on top of Aneas Valley (years ago) FREEZING....I put a mail order in (with a money order back then) for 50 Barred Plymouth Rocks , of which 7 were males...and the date was to be April first...but the Post Master called on March firest & said my birds were there & apparently I marked the wrong box !
Not having any heater in my Ford pick up, I drove to Okanogan & picked the boxes up, and made my kids bundle the babies up...we got home and opened the OVEN, added a rabbit cage on the oven lid, and put the babies in it, and turned on the gas.
Gas oven.
They did fantastic !
They were fat, healthy, lively despite the snow still on the groun..they were an extremely healthy stock.
The pullets laid right on time ...at 6 mo, and they were friendly, but predator wise.
The first batch of McMurry barred plymouth rocks I bought were in 1972...loved them then... and bought them and other breeds repeatedly from their hatchery.
Long story, but funny, no ?
I have lived up in the deepest woods of Elmira Idaho, to the Sierras of california, to Okanogan, WA.
I miss the sage from E WA, and the open plains
And the Quaking aspen in North Idaho (and Moose on the porch after the chicken food!) Suddenly Western Wa seems boring..............and snowlesssss....

Yes, great story!

We are in Mossyrock proper kinda, the block we live on only has our house and property. and no others close that way. I do love my geodesic domes no doubt.
we have been out shopping most the day and just got home so I will make this short. I really like having this group to draw knowledge trade stories coops what is the better chicken or whatever.
Thank you all I enjoy you.
