Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

OK, everyone who is a ""Farmer"" always has a black bag FULL of serious needs for the help of cows/calves/sheep/goats/chickens/dogs/cats/humans who are injured/cut/harmed...and we deal with it.
Never seen a Farmer or Rancher that did not have a black bag FULL/at all times, of what is needed for his/her family/dogs/cats/goats/horses/sheep/cattle.

I thought you were doing vet-like lessons, like how to suture & what kind of sutures to have on hand and how DO you suture, and DO YOU have iodine solution on hand ?
We do for all our animals and US....betadine solution for scrubbing the filth off a part before you suture....Have you razors & clippers to cut the hair/feathers before you scrub & suture ?
You know how to do a suture knot ?
Do you have hemostats & tweezers suitible to the suture ?
Do you have 2x2's ?
Do you have 4x4's ?
These need to be sterilized if at all possible...
The next Q......................... is tape...in the process of dealing with Chickens, the best guaze holder has been 1" elastic guaze..It is self attracting.....DO NOT ever wind it tight, or you will cut off circulation in any animal,
If the wound is on a bird, below,, such as on her entire back, we recommend it washed with betadine & rubbed with triple antibiotic ointment, and then add a cover, such as a cut off sleeve of a sweat shirt...

The large red spot in a hole, about half dollar size, into her abdo cavity... the male did this in 1 day while I was gone !! Though she squatted, he hated her for some reason....her back was hamburger...after he pecked & ate her while standing on her back....I finally got home & saw him on her...she never whimpered !
She would stand there until he killed her.
After washing, with Betadine, debride, poop & dirt, and sutured the gapping holes...........and put these harmed, into a separate, quiet place.

Hen beat to pulp by a male

The sweat shirt sleeve, trimmed for her wings & make sure she can walk without stepping ON the sleeve, I had to trim the lower 'skirt' part off.

So...add all this to your black bag.....along with needles, syringes, antibiotic (by syringe)....handles and blades for cutting, and familiarize yourself how to use these things !
Practice !
Learn how to suture !
Watch videos and get an Orange & practice ! One day your dog may be hit by a car....we hope not, one day your dog may have his pad ripped by stepping on glass...happens alot.
Suturing is the best way you could ever help save your animals!
Learning what to do in an extreme emergency, such as a car impacted .. is a big help, too!
When to "apply pressure" and when to apply a tourniquet, for example, is beneficial for not only your animals, but you & your family too!

When there is an Emergency, be ready for not only your fowl (who need a smaller needle & thread) to your larger animals (those with leathery hides need a bigger cutting needle & suture) and your family !!!
Hanging around the out posts penninsula, falling trees, and it is an hour to a hospital....""""HELLOO"""!!! this is a wake up call to have a BLACK BAG ready with everything needed to deal with suturing, and stopping bleeding...and so we do.
Logging, and dealing with animals for quite a while, we carry a balck bag ready.

I am SO not in your league! I did learn that I could give a needle if I had to once upon a time though. When my son was born and for the first 11 months of his life I had to give him an injection 4 times per day. My new little baby boy! I found I had the strength to do what was needed. I think if I had to I could do this for a chicken. What is the difference with the powder add to water antibiotics and the injectable antibiotics? I saw both at the feed store and opted for powder in the water so I wouldn't have to mess with needles. I see all kinds of incredible things done to chickens here WHILE THEY ARE WIDE AWAKE! Do they not have nerve endings on their skin or what?!?

was a Geneticist for many years achieved that being a dvm before I had a stroke and other issues I have to say your post is right on cue

Oh so great to see you again and how wonderful it is that you have fought so hard for those around you to have chickens & ducks !
Awesome !!! KUDOS to you !!!           :clap

Thanks to our legal battle we have legal proof that we had the birds before the code was rewritten. Our neighbors don't have that but I would be a witness for them if necessary. There are at least eight families in our small neighborhood with ducks and chickens with more added every year and many more backyard birds in surrounding neighborhoods. I am not sure people even know about the code change since there was not much publicity to invite community input. I am glad we have ducks and Heritage chickens, no heavy production bred birds, because they live longer and lay longer.

I'm really impressed that you were willing and able to take this on and win! I admire your grit. Everyone that follows owes you a debt of gratitude! And now others that face the same battle will have one more weapon to use should they need it. Thank you for doing so many "right" things for your daughter, your community, and all the rest of us! And welcome back.

Some medications taste really really nasty !!!
As I recall, some actually will seem to burn the inside of your mouth.
Chickens hate this as well.
Yes, it is strange that chickens seem to not feel a thing as they are operated on, as if they are immune to pain (suddenly) which may be due to shock...IDK....dogs and cats can be this way too, when they are seriously hurt. I have even seen wild animals suddenly "tame" as someone stiches them up...shock I guess ?

The other issue is when a bird is sick, rarely will they be eating & drinking...so your medication goes unused by the sick bird, but the rest of the flock is drinking a medication they really might not need...so it depends.
If the bird is sick, not eating...give it a shot.
If it looks like it is going to die...give it a shot.
Don't be afraid cuz it well may die anyways !
Call your bird friends, find out what you need & as you said, have it on hand, and find out where to give the shot (SubQ ? Or IM ?) and do it.

And rest assured, this, and many many more medications are in every Farmer's medical bag, depending on what she/he raises...goats, cattle, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.

What you did with a brand new baby was monumental !
How HARD it is to cause a baby any pain !
It must have teared you apart to give injections to a baby!

My Kudos to you !
And giving a chicken a shot should be easy-peasy for you !
