Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi, I'm near Bellingham. Brand new to this. I've done tons of research and spent time at a huge chicken farm but still don't have any of my own..yet. we are getting chickens in March. 4 or 5. I really wanted silkies because we knew so many people in Texas where we just moved from, that said they were great with children and not flighty. Do silkies do well here? Are there breeders here? Or should I be looking at something else that would be better in the rain and cold?

People who love silkies, really live silkies and there are folks around here that have them. We can raise just about anything here if the micro climate is provided :welcome Have fun!

oh my gosh how adorable

Well as the day here ends I went to close the door into the run, Like many of us I did the coop on a shoestring budget and the indoor door I bought came apart in my hands. My other half quickly went to garage brought out a door we had from updates here at the house and it fit! putting it in changing the knob from one to the other reattaching the hooks and eyes

I got some of those gamma seal bucket lids. They are wonderful! It is so hard for me to get the lids off those plastic buckets that I keep the feed in. But now it is easy. I highly recommend them.
I use big rubbermaid garbage cans...even still the rattas try to get in...but they cannot !

Amazing how hungry that beaver was !

Silkies are soft feathered, so raised here they may need additional cover from the rain, but there are alot of Silky breeders here, one of which is rather close to you....kind of...oh and Welcome !!

Well, I don't think we have critters that big around here. 5 gallon bucket's have worked, I make fermented feed so I just have a container of it inside the house that I add to my fermented bucket after I feed. These new started pullets are eating like horses! I don't let them free range in my yard yet, i've had them for two weeks now. They are coming down a little but not as much as I would like. It's nice that I have six different looking chickens, I'm glad I can tell them apart. And I went with Eeny, Meeny, Myni and Moe. I have no idea how to spell that obviously :) I might get a couple more chickens later on in the spring but otherwise I think I am done. I've read to hear that you should always introduce at least two new chickens at a time if possible. That would put me at my maximum, and I'd have three different ages of chickens which is kind of nice.

I don't have any extras right now. With hubby and the job situation up in the air at the moment, I haven't planned any hatches. Have actually been eating down the extra birds (old layers and boys).

I only have partridge color silkies. Catdance silkies has several colors of very nice birds.

I haven't had any issues with my silkies here other than they absolutely will not come in from the rain so I have to keep them locked up if it's raining. They have figured out that it mats down their head feathers and then they can see. The little rats also love to dunk their heads in water.
