Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well, let's see. You will have eight nesting boxes. And I have heard up to 10 chickens are even more could use only one nesting box. So 80 would probably be just fine :) :) :) lots of roosts and you'll have it made.

I do hope you know that I was kidding :)!? I'm pretty sure that's not the way to figure out how many birds you can put in a chicken coop. But it sure would be nice if it was. Although I think you could have quite a few especially if they're going to be free ranging most of the time.

Oh yes, I knew that was a jest! I don't think I will go over 25 chickens at any one time.

Hmmm. So how many chickens can I fit in a 8x17 coop? (They free range every day.)

Right now they have two nesting boxes but my husband is building a two level set with 4 on top and 4 on the bottom.

Edited to say: We have 11 chickens right now and 7 Bielefelders that are coming in March.

Depends on how good you are at playing Tetris. If you stack them right, you can get a lot of birds in there.

Serious answer, I have an 8x15 coop that I've had 30+ birds in. They have a 16x35 pen attached, but I let them out to free range regularly. No stress issues with them.

I think the general calculation is 4 square feet per bird inside, and 10 square feet per outside. Mileage may vary by bird size and breed.

Just to update - my 4 little Faverolle cockerels are sold. That leaves me 5 potential pullets and 4 LF cochin - currently gender neutral

- to grow and decide who gets to stay.

One another note - just added a covered area (think miniature carport) to my main coop and added a pvc feeder under there yesterday. Also tore off the leaking roof and had to re-tarp it cause I ran out of daylight and ibuprofen

Have the paper and shingles but need to get another piece of plywood cut to finish it (and maybe more ibuprofen

).

I know what you mean! I need to go stock up on feed and bedding NOW so I don't have to walk in the feed store during "chick days"...I couldn't handle it!!!
I know what you mean... Feed store had speckled Sussex....had to overcome strong urge to get a few. Stocked up on supplies so I don't have to see this too often.

Any idea how to convince DH we need to move to large property?
