Most of my breeds are pretty good layers. I did get three Easter Eggars just for some variety and egg color. I've heard they're not the best layers but that's OK. I was going to get a leghorn, heard they are egg machines, but also heard they were pretty snotty and flighty. And that they would fly over my six-foot fence. So it's just going to be brown eggs and then whatever the Easter eggs end up with. Oh no, I just heard a rooster. I really hope it's coming from the neighbors yard. I better go check.

Once they are fully feathered, they can handle anything an adult can.

OK. Their feathers are coming in very quickly. And they can just about fly out of there brooder box. I will have to put something together out there. All of my chicken enclosures are sort of Jerry rig for right now until I get the new one built.

Remember to ease them into the temperature change.

My EEs have been decent layers. Even at five years old the ones I still have are giving me two eggs a week.

I have heavy netting over my pens to keep out predators but also to keep the birds in. Both the EEs and ameraucana I have WILL fly over the 6 foot fence if they find a hole. Some have gone to great lengths to get out.

I have heavy netting over my pens to keep out predators but also to keep the birds in. Both the EEs and ameraucana I have WILL fly over the 6 foot fence if they find a hole. Some have gone to great lengths to get out.

This is the very reason I no longer have EEs or Ameracauna's

I liked both, and my EE was an excellent layer but they fly well and even with clipped wings she could easily "hop" to the top of the 6 ft fence. I like my Favs and silkies and I am also growing out some LF cochins in the hope that they are "content" to not "flay away"

Had the zip ties holding the netting at a corner break. Watched the EE pace looking at that hole. Then she flap climbed the fence until she could hook her head over the top rail and pull herself out.

My rescue gsd managed to get locked in our
brick pump house and put a whole in the gut of one my new bard pullets. I am not torn up
but was downright po'd with the fact she did it, it was not chewed it had
one whole in the gut but at 3-5 days old the pullet expired.

I've got one Easter Egger that flew 7 feet up and completely cleared the backyard. That kind of ability comes in handy for the random coyotes that pass through in the middle of the day. Many coyotes have tried to catch my girls, but none have managed.

Well, to keep my Easter Eggars in the yard I better plant a whole lot of good things for them to munch on. It's nice to hear that even older chickens are laying. Since I don't plan to eat my chickens when they quit Lane I would hope that they would at least give me an egg once in a while. They haven't tried to fly over the fence yet. The older chickens won't let them wander out of one corner of the yard very much. Will they eventually room for the whole yard? Should I lock the old ones up until the new ones get used to being out in the entire yard?

Okay, folks! I thought I was going to have to wait until next year, but some rich people in my in-laws' neighborhood were giving away a free coop, and we scored this time! Only room for about 8 small-ish hens. My dream is to have two hens each of Egyptian Fayoumis, golden spangled or golden penciled Hamburg, EE, and brown Leghorn. It's hard to find all those breeds in one place! Anyone know of any feed stores who might special order small amounts of rare breeds? Any other suggestions? I know I'll probably have to settle for just the brown Leghorn and EE, but a girl can dream!

My daughter decided she would like to do 4-H and show chickens. She chose our Imported British Splash Orpington - I was wondering as a youth at least if she is able to show them. I can not seem to find any information if they are allowed or not.

Also if anyone has one that has been shown to maybe post a picture so I can get an idea of the desired traits - I've never shown before, so I don't know what to look for as bad traits.
