Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Okay, folks! I thought I was going to have to wait until next year, but some rich people in my in-laws' neighborhood were giving away a free coop, and we scored this time! Only room for about 8 small-ish hens. My dream is to have two hens each of Egyptian Fayoumis, golden spangled or golden penciled Hamburg, EE, and brown Leghorn. It's hard to find all those breeds in one place! Anyone know of any feed stores who might special order small amounts of rare breeds? Any other suggestions? I know I'll probably have to settle for just the brown Leghorn and EE, but a girl can dream!
Cackle has Egyptian Fayoumis, Silver Spangled Hamburgs, Easter Eggers and Brown Leghorns. And they do small orders.

My daughter decided she would like to do 4-H and show chickens. She chose our Imported British Splash Orpington - I was wondering as a youth at least if she is able to show them. I can not seem to find any information if they are allowed or not.

Also if anyone has one that has been shown to maybe post a picture so I can get an idea of the desired traits - I've never shown before, so I don't know what to look for as bad traits.

Thank You =)
For 4-H just about everything is showable. They aren't judging the bird, they are judging the handler. I've seen Easter Eggers entered as Ameraucana that won, and a Barred Rock that was entered as a Silver Laced Wyandotte won best of breed.
Some 4-H programs even allow sexlinks.

Do you know if she keeps up with it later if the IBO is accepted in show - I know Splash isn't acknowledged but we have Blues that are -

Thank you - does the EE have to be a specific color? Dad is a Red and Mom is white

That I'm aware of they are EE , they were free chicks on a shipment we had 4, only 2 survived- she said she wasn't sure if EE or Americauna -

Well good thing I hadn't actually set the incubator yet. I was reminded that I could be flying down to California anytime between two weeks from now and a few months. We just don't know when.

*sigh*

So I went ahead and moved the ameraucana's over into the big pen with the layers. That pen is just below capacity now, but it has all of the large fowl. No free range for a few days for them. Only the large fowl every get unsupervised free range. I've lost to many silkies stepping inside to use the bathroom.

That also means I will have two of the smaller pens (10x20) open so I can set broody silkies when the next one actually does go broody. Surprisingly none of them are at the moment.

I understand judging the handler not the bird. But best in breed should be the correct breed. Are you teaching the kids not to know their chicken breeds? I don't see quarter horses called thorough breads or Herford's called Angus.

It was pretty ridiculous that the judge could tell the difference between any of the breeds.

Splash is not an APA showable variety, but if you pair him with some nice Black hens, he will produce blue chicks.
Easter Eggers really shouldn't be shown or represented as Ameraucana. Whether it's allowed or not, it simply isn't ethical.

The information I did find said EE aren't really a breed which is why I explained to her she needs to pick one of our flocks that is recognized - of course she chose the Splash Orpington, we have Blues as well -

The EE's really isn't a breed we deal with we just decided to keep a flock of them - I could never figure out the EE,Americauna,Aracuana (sp?) to really get into breeding them - since they are complicated to tell the difference between - all I know is I read EEs have green legs? Which ours does and lays a light to darker green egg - the Americauna we had once they layed light blue eggs- after all the confusion we decided not keep them going - this time since we have a pair to hatch out some

Differences between EE, Ameraucana, and Araucana broken down-

Araucana- pea comb, yellow skin, handful of allowed colors, always should be rumpless, show quality birds always have ear tufts, only lays blue eggs.

Ameraucana- pea comb, white skin, handful of allowed colors, always is bearded and muffed, only lays blue eggs.

Easter Egger- any kind of comb type, any skin color, any color/pattern combination, can be muffed and bearded or clean-faced, might lay any color egg.
