Just chased a raccoon off the property with the pellet rifle. Went out to put some trash out, and heard raccoon sounds coming from one of the Rhodie trees, and two Barred Rocks came running full speed out of the same area. Did a quick head count, grabbed the pellet gun and went looking for the critter. It took two hits to get that sucker to run off.

I blasted a rock chuck trying to get into one of my coops last fall. Raccoons are determined.

Why ???
I have never heard of a rock chuck trying to get in a chicken coop...explain please ??

I totally agree! I said I had never had a broody hen, that night and tonight's after that one of my henswas sleeping in the nest box. So I went out and put her back up on the roost. So far she still up on the roost tonight. And I got six eggs from six adult chickens today so I guess that's good.
But if this hen goes brooding I'm going to blame you just because

Hello from rainy SW Washington I have been following the great advice from here for about a year and decided I should probably join in the conversations. So I'm new to the forums. I have a small flock. 2 Buff Orphington hens and a Buff Roo, 2 RIR hens, and 1 White Rock hen. I have 2 hens sitting on clutches(1 hen has 7,other has 11) which is all new to me. So if all goes well we should have 18 chicks in the next week or so. Exciting

I am not actually sure if was a rock chuck. It was bigger than my fat Jack Russell. It charged at me when I came upon it scratching at the coop. I ran back into the house to get the gun and when I got back with the gun it was back trying to get under the chicken wire. Afterwards, I tried googling 'the creature' and the closest description was a rock chuck. Rock chucks are very common around here but I have never seen one that big or colored the same. My working theory is that it some sort of mutant Hanford reservation creature, possibly an X-file.
