Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Need a little help with our Snowflakes:
She is 4 months old, normally really energetic and running around with her head high. She had been like this for the last 3 days.. not eating much.. not drinking much.. Just stand with her head lower and looking sad. Seem like she is sick. She does peck a little but not too much. Even given her treats couldn't motivate her.

I though she could have coccidiosis, but it doesn't look that way since her dropping doesn't have blood.

We separated her and force feed her (open up her mouth and put food and water down her month) and bring her in to the house at night to sleep to keep warm.

Give some thought to low in pecking order, keep her out of the coop or run
for a few days she if she perks up

Really Penny? pecking order is get her down this much? She was on top of the pecking order until we rehome a hen with her 12 chicks.

Oh our poor Snowflakes is in deep depression due to losing her rank :( - did not know losing top spot in the pecking order could do so much hard to her personality.

- Thank you Leigti, I will try that once we give her a couple of days by herself.

It's not because she's upset about her new rank. You may not have enough food and water stations available. The more dominant birds may be keeping her from getting enough food and water. More feeders and more waterers, spread across the run may help.

I lost 2 Ameraucanas last August that went downhill over a 2-3 day period. I treated for vent gleet, but after talking to the breeder months later who suggested coccidiosis I wonder if that was it. Mine were about the same age - they seemed fine but all of a sudden went downhill. When I picked them up, I was shocked at how light they were. We had brooded them in the rental we were living in at the time and they were handled a lot but then we moved them to our new property (before we actually moved there) and we were coming over to feed and care for them. Even if there is no blood in the stools it could be coccidiosis- it can fly under the radar and then they go down fast. Treating for cocci shouldn't hurt her if she doesn't have it, but may save if her she does. Just a thought.

I know the question wasn't directed to me but the BBS Ameraucanas I had both the cockerels were very friendly, the sister was a very productive blue egg layer! Sadly I lost the best cockerel in the middle of winder (decided to roost somewhere else and never came home) then I lost the sister who laid 7 eggs/week to a raccoon attack in the early morning right before I got home from work

. I got my eggs from the East coast.

Luckily I had her eggs in the fridge still that I took out and hatched from, got 3 daughters that I currently have but they are the above crosses mentioned (Ameraucana/Leghorn) both barred and black, all 3 with beards. Very productive birds but definitely brooding tendency!

I should have worded that better - all experiences/opinions are welcome! I am just done with having to watch out for an aggressive rooster for me and my family. Our BCM regularly attacks my husband and I walk around with a rake! He will be replaced soon enough - in the last month he has sounded the alarm on attacks from a bald eagle, neighborhood dog and a huge coyote (standing not 5 feet from the flock) - all unsuccessful thank God! He is serving a purpose.

My Ameraucana roosters have always been friendly, pleasant birds. I have two now (one black, one blue). The wheaten male I got from our mutual source was the nicest of them all. I just sold him to someone with small children as a flock rooster because he is such a sweetie. The Wellie roosters are not friendly in the same way.....very business minded which makes them excellent flock guardians. My best Wellie rooster is an excellent watchdog, takes great care of the hens......makes me laugh but they actually seem to kinda swoon over him.....always wanting to be the one to roost next to him, follow him everywhere, eat the tidbits he offers them. He is also good at dancing for the hens, while the Am roos are a bit less courtly. I have had him rush towards me with his hackles up a few times when emotions have been high in the pasture (like he has been alarming over a hawk or neighbor's dog) but if I just stop and look at him he stops, then turns away. I think it goes with the highly protective nature he has.....but I would be cautious with him if I had kids and wouldn't let them in with him unsupervised.

Good luck with your broody hatch!
Thank you!! I am hatching the Doms which should be good watchdogs, so I may take a chance on some straight run Ams.

gotta tell off subject our own sweet EE is the first to run to them like HI
and they all ran over to the side of the 700 wire crate they are in to her

Only two of the dozen eggs I bought off Craigslist hatched. The four big ones that look like double yolks never started developing but they are cloudy, not clear, so my daughter left them in with the others. Four look like quitters but since my candler bulbs are both burned out I can only see the air cells and not much detail. There are two that look like they should have hatched with one possibly have pipped internally but there is no movement so I assume they are dead too. They are back in the incubator just in case they are still alive.

Out of the two that hatched neither one looks like an Ameraucana chick. The first one has all white down and white skin while the second one at least has chipmunk markings but white skin. I never would have spent money on these chicks and the eggs cost me $10 so I got scammed. If I had been able to pick up the eggs myself I never would have bought them but I trusted the information in the listing and my husband did not look at the eggs when he picked them up for me. There is no way I will ever get my money out of these chicks because they are worthless. After another day I will open the two developed eggs if they don't hatch to see what colors they are but I doubt they are what I expected either.
