Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

If you have the legal proof that you are fine, let him be a jerk all he wants he is just wasting his own time. Are there any other people in your community that are in your same situation? He might be picking on them too. Maybe you can all get together and push back.

@Duck Drover I am so sorry to hear that you are back in the fight with
animal control.. you think the officer would realize your not one to bulied
maybe you could email city fathers a dozen or so times complaining
get him fired through higher ups for his harassment?

The slowest to feather are usually the boys. I have had some go through an awkward naked butt stage while the rest are feathering in nicely and they have been roosters. The thicker legs is also a good indication of a rooster. We have had some look like pullets until their longer streamer feathers came in on the hackle and saddle areas so comb size and color is not always the best way of sexing the English Orpingtons. I have likewise had pullets with larger red combs and wattles that I thought would be roosters but I was wrong. They can seem obvious and then fool you so I grow them out more and more each year before parting with the roosters and selling the pullets. I have been tempted to sell the whole flock but I do like how beautiful and docile they are so I have not done it yet.

Any guess from the pics I posted? One still has a strip from neck to butt that is not fethered.

It is not Animal Control, it is code enforcement. It is based on numbers with the city trying to restrict the number to five now (after falsely trying to limit to three, which was the limit of dogs and cats). Animal Control does not have any issues with the birds because they only enforce the county codes, not city codes. If there were any complaints about the birds, they should go to Animal Control and not the code enforcement officer.

I already have legal proof that I was not violating any codes prior to the rewrite so my property is grandfathered but the code enforcement officer is trying to fine me $100 a day for the first two weeks when I have 14 days to file an appeal, then $250 a day for another two weeks, then $500 a day after that, all before I can get another judgement against the city to defend my property rights. Because all it takes is his word saying I can only have 5 birds and no roosters, he expects me to get rid of our birds without questioning the legality of his false claims. If I do that I will lose my grandfathered status so I have held onto more birds than I would have under the old code to make sure I keep my rights grandfathered.

I notified the higher ups that he was harrassing me again and they defended him saying it is not personal. He knows I am grandfathered because he was in court when I won my case and so was his boss. They are not about to follow the law if they can get away with intimidation. I asked about how to file a formal complaint because I have talked to others who have been harrassed by him too but I was told that my e-mail was enough so they are not telling me how to make an official complaint.

I will have to keep this in mind. I have had at least 1 rooster since moving to my home before the re-wrote the rule about roosters. That should mean that I am grandfathered into the old code as well? Or is that status different based on which city you are in?

I finally got some decent pictures of my project birds! As much as I like and wanted blue birds, I really like the look of the black with the contrasting white earlobes and then the beetle sheen in the sun! My parents are enjoying them too, lots of medium sized blue eggs from these young pullets.

Looking forward to the ones I am keeping reaching POL, I kept 5 blue and 1 black pullet from my most recent hatch.

I want to put some sort of cover over my run. The birds will be locked in the coop at night so it's basically just to keep them in my six-foot fence and to keep the wild birds out. Should I use bird netting or deer netting? Or something else? Three sides of the run will be chain-link fence.

They are very pretty. And blue eggs would be pretty cool. Stupid question but what kind of chickens are they? You said they are a project, are you making a new breed or continuing with an established one? Sorry for the stupid questions I'm just interested. I don't want to breed any chickens but I'm interested in other peoples projects.
