I took one of the 3 week olds outside today. It stood in the grass frozen stiff and trembling at the huge space. Only relaxed after I tucked it under my chin. They will be getting a house outside the back door soon. I want them out of the bathroom

Haha! Me too. Try havin TEN 8 week old chicks still in your living room!

Why the heck are they still in the HOUSE?! They could have been out weeks ago. Mine go straight from the incubator to the garage brooder (average temp out there is 50*). By the time they are 4 weeks old, they are feathered in and outside.

Haha! Uh... because I'm a SUCKER and was afraid it's to cold... Newbie move? LOL Penny is coming up today to help me hopefully finish my coop. Then I'll hopefully be able to move them out super soon!

I don't have a garage so stuck with chicks inside right now. That's why they are getting a coop outside the bathroom window. I can run power out the window.

Had my first escapee today. Distressed peeping so I went to see what was wrong. The chick sitting in the middle of the bath rug came towards me when it saw me.

Elk, deer, goat, then beef in that order for my preferred meats.

Mom and Dad hunted. Dad still does but with the increased cougar population, hunters don't usually get anything anymore in eastern Oregon. A decade ago there would be lots of deer babies around my parent's cabin. Now Mom says you only see one or two and there are less deer overall.
WeHave lush green grass here, no sage, so our deer taste awesome year round, not that we shoot them year round.
The does also ALWAYS...well about 99% of the time, have twins.
The doelings are a grey like their mothers and the bucklings are browner.. and have the dark forehead like a mule deer does......we can easily tell a male of female baby from afar.

I do love goat, too!
I am considering getting 2 weaners this spring....if I can get my rear in gear and get a pen built. We haven't had pigs here, but have had them in other places we've lived.

The new buck is settling in. He's a California/New Zealand/Giant Chinchilla cross.

And the two 5 week old red New Zealand does that will be his girlfriends.
Make sure he is not too big for the does...like dogs, if the male is huge, it can be difficult if not impossible for the does to pass the giant babies through the birth canal.
We found out the hard way when we have a Flemish giant buck and though it would be great to have bigger babies....the California Does had no problem birthing the Flemish babies, but the smaller does like the New Zealands did on occasion.
We lost a few does that way

After a rough day at work, my girls surprised me with my first egg from the Ameraucana chicks that I got in early June! Just the surprise I needed. Now to get hubbs excited like me and get those breeding pens set up:D

Hooray !
Mine have quit for winter & not started back up yet.

Any Bucklings to be sold for meat ?
Or is it too early or too late ?
