Thank you! I don't know why I can't see the "insert quote" button on my phone or internet explorer, but it was there when I switched to chrome.

I've posted a few times, but I don't think I ever really introduced myself. I'm in rural Thurston county near Olympia. My husband grew up on a farm, but I did not. After living on acreage for several years, we finally got 5 chickens last summer. Then we enrolled my kids in 4-H, and got really hooked. My daughter is a serious animal lover - no matter how upset she is seeing her chickens brings an instant smile. And I've fallen in love with them too. So now the chicken math has begun. We currently are at a total of 26 birds.

View attachment 1103185 This is how it looked on Friday. We were at the Wild Horses turn out. The picture below is on the Vantage Bridge. It felt like someone was sitting on your chest. The air quality was terrible.

We had to go to Cheney to be at a funeral.......and OMG it was so HOT and STILL, and like a heavy dustiness in the air that made my asthma x 2..........

Well it's been a challenging couple of weeks around here. DH had heart surgery with no time to prepare, moved mom to memory care, brother had surgery, so no help from the men folk doing any of the moving. Mom passed on Sat., that was hard. I haven't had the experience of sitting a vigil before. Then had to move all her things again on Sunday and today, and still no brawn. Now comes all the crazy a$$ paperwork for everything and a garage full of stuff to sort through and get rid of and burial arrangements, and phone calls up the ying yang. I'm tired!

But in the midst of it all one of my two new SFH pullets layed her first egg. Gee that was nice. And she's the sweetest girl I've had in years.

Sorry about Mommie, and good to see you post here again ! Hope you do OK, I know the $ part of death is far more over whelming !

We're going blueberry picking tomorrow too. I've never tried actually making anything with the salal.

I'm so sorry for your loss CarolynF. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Had a huge scare yesterday - we came home unexpectedly late from the fair and four 2 month old chicks and a hen were missing. We thought for sure they got eaten, but as soon as the sun came up we found them roosting in the fruit trees. I think it's time to clip some wings!

I'm already starting to plot out next spring's chick order. Not sure we really need more, but the fair was fun and made me kind of want some better quality bantams.

Their wings were the only thing that saved them.
Why would you want to clip them & make them more vulnerable ?
