Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

What is that bird?

Quail. He's missing most of his topknot at the moment to molt so he doesn't have that distinctive feature at the moment.

I assume that he likely escaped from someone. He just showed up one day last year. He'd freak and take off flying when he saw me for the longest time. Now he will come within a few feet of me.

The silkies have easily available food and are very accepting of others. He will snuggle up to any hen who's laying down, though he has favorites. He's also bossy with the roosters who usually just ignore him if they aren't running away, though my white rooster likes him and they sleep together sometimes.

I actually worried about him last winter because I didn't know where he was sleeping. He'd sleep in the brush alone all last fall. Then I got ran over one evening when checking one of the silkie houses.

Very cute. You mean you got run over by the quail trying to get in with the Silkies?

Looking for a Coop Builder in Shelton, WA. Don't want to take a chance on the pre made kits. 4-5 bird coop on my 7'x9'cement slab already laid. I'm retired & looking to spend about $500. Can assist with clean up & errands. Thanks, Daniel
When we built our first coop $500 did cover the cost of the materials, but unless a carpenter friend with time on his hands, I don't think anyone will do the labor for free. That coop was only 4'x8'. The next coop we will build will probably be about the size you're talking about and I expect the materials to run close to $1,000. I recommend you try Craigslist for a shed. They are fairly easy to convert.
