Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I gave one of the Easter egger broodies eggs. They are due this coming Thursday. I just candled and I'm guessing they'll hatch Sunday/Monday. I'm wondering if the hatchery hen that hot bakes them is her mother.

The only problem is that she's in the juice box and not the open floor level nest box so chicks can't get out. I couldn't convince her to move and she's viciously defended her nest from hens laying in it.

I have to re-evaluate what I'm doing on chickens. I'll probably be reducing the flocks.

Hubby likely won't be able to return to working for a while more still. He still can't do a lot of things with his hand. So we're adjusting the budget to where we can survive.

I'm hoping for 2 pullets from this hatch and we'll eat the boys and sell extra girls most likely. They only lay small to medium eggs as they aren't large birds and will definitely go broody at least once a year. The 3 adult pullets of this cross aren't even a year old yet and all have done so.

We were very careful when we bought this place on how much the mortgage was. Planning ahead like that means we'll be ok even if just with all the bills. Tricare is a lifesaver as it's paid directly from his retirement. No cost to see the doctor on base and meds are free at the base pharmacy.

This has been a busy day 6 of 8 hatched so far .. the last two will look later see of they died in the shell or late to hatch.. Photos are the four first ones
