Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have one rooster. Smudge he is big boy.
There had been two we had Red for dinner one night ..
Smudge is respectful rooster but one night he was missing.
He stayed with the girls in the little coop that night

I lost a young rooster from the same group back in the late summer to an Eagle fly by. So I was thinking the worst when I couldn't find him. I was actually impressed that I could pick him up out of that coop and carry him back to his own with no issues. I mean, the pouring rain probably helped. But I was still pleased that he didn't peck me and was happy to snuggle in on the walk.

One day about 2 years ago now. I was collecting a few birds to auction.
Smudge freaked ran out the door .. He was up in the brambles other corner of the yard saw him run in there..
Next day I go out. He crowed at me, I go up start talking to him. BF still tells that rooster followed me across the yard back to his coop. I was so shocked he had.

Hey, all! I’ve been a member of byc for a while now, but I just found this WA thread! It’s nice to meet other chicken/duck people here!

I recently put my 15 month old drake on CL to rehome him because he has now severely injured 3 of my 6 duck gals. I’m just wondering if you all think it’s better to keep him in a full-time separate area where he can see the girls, but never hurt them? Or should I continue to offer him up on Craigslist? I am not against giving him to someone as a meat bird, even though I would just have to pretend he went to “a big pond in the country.”

I had to cull a female Pekin back in 2020 because she had some congenital defect, and failure to thrive. I just don’t think I could do that again.

so… Thoughts?

Anyone want a gigantic Pekin drake?

Well he is pretty cute! I don’t have ducks so can offer no good solution. As long as you’re upfront with people who may want him, go ahead and try to rehome him. If you’re ok with him being food, do you have a wildlife shelter or rehab place nearby? We have one that’s really handy for unwanted roosters. Serves a good purpose too.
As far as keeping him separately yourself, only you can decide if you’re up to that. Someone here says “solve for the peace of the flock”. You are the most essential part of your flock so your serenity is the most important consideration. You obviously love him, I’m sorry he doesn’t have better manners! And welcome to the thread! What part of the state do you call home?

Welcome Only thing of offering for pet? If you want him to live lock him in for a few months .. He is in hormonal rage just now ..
Give him look no touch for maybe 6 or so months ?
Let the hormones settle a bit may become great drake for you.

Anybody want a rooster?

Eclipse, Starburst's black silkie rooster is super sweet with people, but unfortunately the girls don't like him in turn. As his hormones have begun to kick in, he continuously tries to mate the hens, and they're pretty terrified of him and will run away. Eclipse, with his ego bruised, will then run after the girls until he can (try, sometimes unsuccessfully,) mate them, either through submission of the hens or force. He's very, very sweet with people, although as he's becoming older, he might occasionally try to show whose boss, but a quick scoop into your arms reminds him of his sweet nature. Unfortunately, some of the girls won't come out of the coop because they're scared of him. (In their long lives, they've never really seen a rooster before)

He isn't show quality, (doesn't have a big crest, and on the shoulder there's some pink skin) but he's very handsome and we are willing to give him to a good home where he can live out his roostery life in peace and happiness

Thanks!

Do not recall where you are but auction or dinner ?
I have one growing up here it is frizzle and silkie mix.
Not old enough I guess has not gone after any of us.
Smudge my resident rooster was held solid to the ground and given a boot when he was younger has never tried again . He is Marans so Big boy.

No room with my large fowl as Leven has proven himself to be the best possible flock rooster after a bit of a rocky start a few years ago.

I butchered 6 of his sons a couple months ago because they were just mean to the hens. Certain hens took to hiding in the nest boxes and the others were practically glued to Leven because he kicked the cockerels butts. They finally all tried to take him on at once (and lost), so I got fed up.
