Flip Flops are not my friend never been able to wear them.
I do have a pair of Birk's but prefer bare foot around the house or in the grass.
Have a worn out pair of keds no laces.. I can slip in go to the coop or garden.

Im barefoot as much as I can. I get yelled out for going in chicken pens barefoot or with flip flops now by hubby. Hubby won't forget about waiting at the ER with me to get that rat tooth cut out of my toe. I still stomp rats, it didn't cure me of that

I finished up tacking the lathing boards over all the exposed hardware cloth edges on the run. Still have to do the skirting and fill in the rafter holes, but it's getting closer to being done.

But the way if feels, there'll always be work of some kind to do to the run.

The garden soil felt kind of dry so I watered it. That hot wind today sucked the moisture out of the dirt.

We're at 91° at 10:30. Too hot for this side of the mountains.

Apparently I injured my feet stomping up clam sign yesterday. Can barely walk today. Need to find my flip flops. Those would make them feel better. I have an extra bit of bone on the top of both feet right under the nerve up top. Pressure causes issues. The extra bone started as bone spurs but is about the size of a nickel now. Wearing Birkenstocks for 30 years can do horrible things to your feet it seems. Wish the doctor who saw the spurs would have told me it was probably my footwear so it wouldn't have advanced this far. Podiatrist said change shoes when she saw the bone.
Never had a pair of Birkenstocks, but I thought they were supposed to be good for your feet. Well, you probably did too, until they weren't. Sorry to hear about all the foot pain.

I never had Birkenstocks either. I have a pair of slip on sandals I bought at Walmart 4 or 5 years ago that are pretty comfortable. Kind of a rubber material. I'm surprised they lasted so long at costing only 10 bucks.

Got the last of the tomatoes and pepper plants in the ground just a little while ago. The other tomatoes I planted don't seem to be doing well. The leaves are all yellow tinged and there's no growth. Maybe they got shocked/stressed by cold weather from planting too early???

Maybe my dirt has problems. Never got it tested.

You stomp the rats barefooted???!!!

I've kicked one barefoot, I'm not afraid of rats after raising them. Flip flops are no better than barefoot. I was wearing those when I got bit. It broke off both top teeth. One in the top of my foot by the last toes and one on the inside of the pinky toe. I got the top one out and both hubby and I tried on the toe one. I took the tooth I got out to the ER with me to show them what I was talking about. The receptionist freaked about rabies. The medic was skeptical there was a tooth but the doctor took it in stride and ordered an X-ray then went "Yes, there it it. Cut it out medic. Just a tetanus shot. Rabies is very rare from rats."

Hermes decided to help me catch a rat from the fence a couple months ago. He pulled it's front through and it got my knuckle. He knows to leave rats I'm pulling off the fence alone now. Yes I killed the rat. Yes I still pull them off the fence because if I don't have dog help, I don't get bit.

I went in for regular a checkup about 6 days after the rat bite and my doctor freaked out about the bite and I told her what Id been told by the ER doctor years before when I'd gotten it in the toe. She had to look it up herself before she calmed down about rabies.

I had this walking stick forked end caught a rat with it yelling at DH help but stepped on it too crushed the darn thing.
Broke the fork end had him pinned so hard. I ordered a bunch of rat traps then.

So... now that I have chickens I can expect to see rats? I hope not.

I know I have some mice running around. I caught a few of them this winter in traps I had set in the shop, which shares a wall with my new run. But mice, I figure when the chickes are old enough, well, they'll catch them and eat 'em, I hope.

You're both very brave! I would hit them with a shovel or shoot them with my bb gun, but not stomp them. But I guess when protecting your flock, bravery just happens. LOL

Maybe I should be proactive and keep a couple of rat traps set just outside my new chicken run, huh?
