Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Very nice beans!
Seems a lot of my shelling beans are half runners. Planted a couple new varieties this year, and they are shooting up. Oh, well, guess they'll have to lay there. Very difficult to try and install trellises after the fact.
I rigged up what I guess you'd call a floating trellis. I looped some old electrical wire around the top board and hung another board through the bottoms of the loops. Then trained the vines around the wires so they know where to go.

Maybe they are half runners. Never heard of those. I remember last year some put out rather short runners too.

Nice carrots! I have a hard time here with root maggots, so I quit growing them. Did get a nice haul of assorted beets today. Cooking the greens later. I'm going to wait until this weather cools off before I start canning and jamming.
I can't grow beets because of root maggots, and I had maggots eating some of the carrots last year in the same bed.

I planted carrots in different beds this year and didn't have the maggot problem. Maybe you could try a different location for your carrots that maggots haven't found yet.

If my red Russian kale makes seeds like it's trying to I'll give you some seeds if you want. The Russian kale grows great for me here. It survives temperatures in the teens during the winter.

I found that one of my chickens laid a couple of eggs underneath the coop. One was from yesterday I think. I accidently locked her out of the coop last night. Luckily no raccoons got her.
Always a sigh of relief when they are back in safety. One of my new pullets got out while I was gone on vacay, and no one could get the little terd back inside for a couple days! And being black, she was hard to locate .

Currently in season. Picking and climbing up and down a ladder is tough on these old creaky knees. Thankfully, DH can climb quite well.
Also pulled up all my beets, separating the leaves, stems, and roots. Will saute the greens, process the roots later when it cools off. I'll bake them, then make canned and pickled beets.

Surprise sunflowers not the variety on the package, but still pretty.

Thank you! I try to keep a layer of mulch over most of the garden. Really helps at keeping the weeds from getting established. Are those yellow fruit in the box yellow plums?

--------------

I cut out most of an invasive Himalayan blackberry that was tangled in my camellia bush. No gloves, fingers got pricked several times. Those dang blackberry thorns are wicked! Neighbor and her grandkids got a tour of my garden this morning. Cleaned and refilled the chickens' 5 gallon bucket waterer. I just put the green beans in the fridge. In a few days I'll pick more, then I'll blanch and freeze.

I am beat and I am done for the day.

Blackberries are the second worst, second to marion berries, though. I bought a good pair of long leather gloves just for those. Works well until the vine stabs the back of your hand.
Got my beets pulled, washed and greens and stems put in the fridge to cook later. Too hot to heat up the house. Made a batch of plum jam. Yes, those are Shiro (asian) plums.
