Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Oh gosh...let's see....I have 3 8 year olds, Wordie, Birdie and Gertie. They are Australorps. Then I have 8 more, ages 1 thru 7, all with names, but it's late, so I could tell you another time when I'm feeling sharper. And now I have 3 more chicks, which seem to be pullets, and they are Bossy, Sweet Sue and Mary. Altogether, I have Australorps, Buff Orpingtons (my all time favorite), one Lavender Orpington, and Leghorns (also only 1 now), and some barnyard mixes.

I also have two roosters, Cooper, who is a Black Copper Marans, and Ralphie, who is a Buff Orpington. Cooper lives on his own, at this time, but adjacent to everyone, and with lots of space. Ralphie is the main guy, with siring duties.

We do have a broodie, atm, so we will see how Ralphie is doing. lol

Last year the job was Cooper's, and after 6 broodie sessions, no chicks. I was disappointed to have to buy 3 chicks this year, so I hope Splash, the current broodie, who is a Buff Orpington over Australorp mix, brings us some chicks.

All our chickens are happy and healthy, except for the Leghorn. She is doing okay, but has already lost both siblings at only two years old. I'll never do that breed again. Unfortunately they have bred them to be short lived and very productive, and that is just too sad for me. I just want healthy happy hens, with great roosters who take care of them. They can live here as long as they want, well into retirement. We have plenty of space for them.

Are you sorry you asked?

Not sorry at all, haha! That's sweet; that's what I'd like to do. My dad sees the chicks as livestock, which they are, but... I really love them. They're my baby birbs. I've got Gertrude, Myrtle, Spot, Splash, Chip, Dale, the Scientist, Billie, Princess, Derby, Banty, Blondie and White Lightning. :p I suspect Gertrude is actually a Gus, but we shall see.

I'll have to sell most of the ones in the incubator because of space and necessity, but I'm definitely keeping one or two. They're probably going to be brown frizzle x black cochin. I'm excited for them big time.:jumpy

I temporarily closed up the day run doorway with plywood and OSB so the chickens could get out and get some fresh air for the rest of the evening. They've watched me working the last few days and deserve to see what I did for them.

There are 6 inch openings in the metal fence up high that the young ones could theoretically be able to fly up and escape through, but I don't think they will. I threw in a lot of weeds for them to eat, and with all the distraction of being in a new place, that should keep the little ones from looking up and trying to find a way out. I hope. LOL

Tomorrow I'll build the permanent door, hang it, and put up the plastic deer mesh. Plus I need to close up a small area over the doorway, maybe with chicken wire, maybe plywood. I'll sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

The first brave one that came out...
