Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm pretty happy with the heat wave we've had this year. It looks like it will at least last through next week.

And that means a good tomato harvest. :ya I picked 5 lbs today and I know I'll be picking another 5 next week. Then I'll make some marinara. There are tons of tomatoes out there so as long as the weather stays warm I'll be harvesting weekly for a while.

And beans! 4 lbs of those too. Those will be blanched and frozen today.
What, no more pickled beans??? LOL
Will 10 pounds of tomatoes make enough of your sauce? I'm guessing that I'll probably get another 50 or 60 pounds of tomatoes, enough for my salsa but I probably won't get enough to make much tomato sauce.

Cockerel update; he didn't crow a single time today after singing for a couple minutes this morning. If he keeps that kind of routine I won't mind having him close to the house.

I will make more pickled beans, maybe another jar so I can try it without the sugar, but not today. Too much going on right now. There will be many more beans to pick. Maybe next week.

10 lbs will make enough marinara for us these days. We used to eat pasta often, like nearly every week, but we don't now. I don't make chicken parmesan anymore either, just eggplant parm in the summer. I make a completely different sauce for pizza and that is too thick to can, so I'll make it as needed. Plus I still have a dozen jars from last year, which is why I know I don't need so much anymore. I may throw all that out. Haven't decided.

I don't know how many tomatoes I'll get after next week. There are probably 30 or 40 lbs of tomatoes on the bushes, but I don't know what to expect of the weather. Once we get into Fall weather nothing seems to ripen anymore, so it all depends on the sun. If I do get a lot more tomatoes, I will just can them and leave it at that.

I like pico de gallo better than salsa, so that is fresh every week for us. Can't can it.

Today was tomato picking day. I got nine pounds, mostly paste tomatoes, and will need around a week to finish ripening indoors. Combined with what I picked last week I have nearly 12 pounds.

I'll start making salsa in batches as they ripen. I have plenty of onions but I'll need to buy some bell peppers to go along with the Jalapenos and Habaneros I have in the garden.

If I use this recipe I won't need to buy any peppers for my salsa...

The ingredients include 6 cups of chopped tomatoes and 9 cups of onions and/or peppers. Since I have lots of onions and shallots I can use fewer peppers, and with the habaneros I have growing I'll still be able to get a little heat.
