Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hope you find a roomy soon Penny Jo. Start thinking about getting your garden going next year, save a few bucks on food.

My dang chicken coop is smelling like ammonia lately and I think it might be due to the higher protein All Purpose feed they're eating. It's 18% protein and that's probably too much. I'll get lower protein food next time and see if that helps.

My chicks are all doing great in the new brooder box I put together. I bought two HomeDepot moving boxes, 24"x24"x20". I taped them together so the chicks have a 24x40 box to live in.

The 75 watt ceramic heater bulb works great at about 10 inches from the floor. Chicks find the spot under it that's best for them at the moment.

I used a mix of shavings from the Farm Store and decomposed woodchips for the bedding. Tomorrow I'm going to add a little of the dirty woodchip bedding from the chicken run to start getting the little ones inocculated with all the bugs/bacteria that the older ones are living with. Give them their childhood vaccinations. LOL

A heating pad without a auto shutoff works better and safer.

I have one of those old heating pads that doesn't shut off, but the hanging ceramic heater works great. I'm VERY careful to make sure it doesn't drop down into the bedding.

I'm wondering if I should start hatching another batch of chicks. It's kinda fun to make chicks out of eggs. LOL

Did your chicks hatch Penny Jo?

Have you seen the hatch alongs? There are threads here just for people who love to hatch out chicks. I think that would be a great place for you.

Yeah, I've seen those hatch alongs. I'm not that much of a social type. I'll stick to where I'm comfortable. For now anyway. Did you cook something fancy today Valerie? Cheap pizza and beer here today, an old friend came down to visit from Milton. Nice visit.
