Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi everyone!!

New to this site and new to chickens.

I'm from Lynden, just bought a house here a year ago. I have two EEs and two Buff Orps in my backyard and they are so fun to watch! They are each 18 weeks old and I'm getting excited that I'm not to far away from getting fresh eggs (hopefully, that is!).

Glad to be part of this great community. I have learned a lot in a short period of time from you all!!

Breakfast in a hurry has to start with a plan. Planning is the critical factor in the gluten-free diet because we can never be sure there will be safe food anywhere. From the workplace, to school, and traveling, there may not be something filling, healthy and gluten free if you dash out the door without breakfast. There are lots of bars on the market that are gluten free, but they can be expensive. I do keep Larabars stashed in the car and in my purse for emergencies because they give me a burst of energy and I can keep my wits about me and make good decisions on what to eat next. I find that I am most at risk for getting accidental gluten when I'm hungry and shaky and don't ask the right questions or miss an ingredient on a label when all I want to do is get some quick calories. So planning and having quick foods we can grab and go is the key to getting out the door in the morning with a good start.
Making your own power or energy bars is an inexpensive way to have them on hand. With all the extra food sensitivities that seem to travel with gluten issues, it's also a way to control the ingredients in your bar to customize it to your tastes, allergies, and food sensitivities. As I was combing my blogging friends' recipe pages, I found that Elana of Elana's Pantry not only posted a new recipe for chocolate cranberry power bars, but linked to more recipes. I've never gone wrong with a recipe from Elana's blog or her book, from quiche to fish cakes to cookies. Try Backcountry Power Bars or Mile High Energy Bars from the skiing, yoga-loving nutrition therapist, Melissa at Gluten Free For Good, for an extra boost of energy in the morning. See how Heidi at Adventures of a Gluten-Free Mom adapts a recipe to make gluten-free bars she wraps individually so they are ready to go.
So round up all the nuts, dried fruit, cereal, and seeds you have and combine them to make your own quick burst of energy for those rushed mornings as you're flying out the door.

I have no problems with having blood drawn or getting stuck. But the takers are so serious I start saying, in an alarmed way, ouch, ouch, ooh, ouch b4 they're even close to sticking that dang thing in. I get a smile and a chuckle or two afterwards. Best thing is, I'm concentrating on their facial response so I don't feel the stick.

I have had the flu shots for many years-some soreness at injection site for a couple of days. Never got the flu from it, and haven't had the flu since I started getting them. I kinda miss it because when I used to get the flu, I'd lose a few pounds from not eating.Sure could use that now.

Had the shingles shot earlier in the year- some minor swelling& soreness in shoulder, and redness, no big deal. Would have gotten the whooping cough shot but, discovered Medicare didn't cover it and it was expensive.

I am very imaginative, so I never read the side effects part of the info. Otherwise I would conjure up every thing that could possibly occur. I figure I would certainly recognize a BAD reaction and get help for it.

Might I add I am a terrible wuss about shots, blood tests, etc. Used to faint at the sight of needles and scare the heck out of the nurses. Fortunately got over that. Only had novacaine for extractions because I was more afraid of the needle than the pain of drilling cavities etc. Realized late , that I was better off with the novacaine. Funny tho how I go for the shots myself and used to need a parent to drag me. Guess I finally matured( my father would have said "manured") or something. Still have 9 million other phobias but, try to tackle only one at a time.

I am not trying to downplay reactions that other people get. We are all different and have different levels of sensitivity. Sometimes, especially if school age kids are in the family, you can be incubating flu before getting the shot or may have some other healthy situation going on that lessens the effectiveness of the vaccine. I mainly started getting the flu shot when my son started pre-school, hoping to prevent flu in my elderly parents- so the 3 of us went in together. My son is an adult now and can get free shots at work but, won't go.

PS One place oit here is hyping the BIG dose flu shot for over 65. I asked my doctor about it and he said it wasn't any better, they are just trying to get more $$$$ out of you.
LOL The only good that has come out of the past month I have lost a solid 20 lbs. The bad news was that I had to go buy smaller pants. I had started to worry that all but one pair of pants that I own were going to fall down. I found a few newer pairs of jeans at a Goodwill store and I was happy to leave behind the pair of clean jeans that I was wearing. I haven't weighed this much for many years now. It is rather nice to look in the mirror and see that my clothes fit so much better.

I haven't been sick with a cold or flu for years. Even when I stilled had kids we didn't get sick very often. It probably helped that we home- schooled the kids for most of their schooling years. My DD would get sick fairly often when she was in school, and the last time she went to school she missed at least 3 weeks out of the two months she was there. I am big on hand washing and common sense, and it seems to work.

I was told that insurance doesn't cover the shingles vaccine. I would be willing to get that shot, because I don't even want to risk the possibility any more nerve pain. The out pocket expensive of about 320.00 makes it rather difficult to justify over other things at the moment.

You came down with influenza ? Be sure to report that to your local health department if your Dr has not already done so.
Just going to throw this out there.....the flu shot is a killed virus. You can't actually get the flu from the shot. Now if you had the nasal mist, you can. It does take 2 weeks or more for the flu shot to build the antibodies in your system so you can more easily fight the flu. You can still get the flu but it is usually a virus that the current shot doesn't cover. You must have gotten exposed to it before the shot took any real effect. That sucks! I had that happen once and I was a little ticked off. But I had a family friend who is a Doctor, explain it to me. I wasn't quite so mad, but wished I had gotten it earlier. I get one now because my stepson has virally induced asthma and we try to avoid getting sick the best we can. But I am not sure I would bother if he didn't have asthma.

OMGosh, so I was 300 something posts behind on the other Washington thread, then skipped to the end and found that I was no longer on the right thread anyways! LOL. I found my way here and now am 400 something posts behind!!!! My brain is not recouped enough to read all that, so I really hope I did not miss anything important. Hoping that no one lost any birds, friends or family members and that all is well with everyone.
The weekend before last started a good week of sickness in our house. We hardly ever get sick, and when ever any of us do (like the flu) it only is a 12-24 hour thing. Our first two kids held to that and then the next two that got sick one held our for 3 days and the other for four. Kid number 5 did not get sick but I did half way through last week. DH did not get it thank goodness and I am very glad that both of our DD's are fine now as they leave for Disney Land with my BIL and his wife this coming weekend.
Also, one of our DD's had her first MMA tournament this past Saturday. She got 2nd place out of three, the girl that got 1st place was at least 4in taller than our DD and had a huge reach advantage on her. But even with that she only lost by 1 point. I told her that just because she got a medal and a certificate (all the kids got one of these cheesy things) that it does not mean that she does not still need to work on her technique. I do not like that every one gets a trophy or medal these days when it comes to kids sports. I feel that it makes the kids think that they do not need to work any harder to get first place or to win the game because "every one is a winner". I don't mean this in a harsh way, I think my DD and most of the kids there did great and tried their hardest, but there are winners and losers for a reason and I praise my DD and most of the others for getting up there and doing their best but the goal is to have fun, learn, and work as hard as you can to win or get to 1st place. But this is all just my opinion!
Lastly, I have 31 eggs in the incubator (and I will have to look up what day they are on) about 2 week along and they are all progressing. Holy cow I did not expect them all to be good and to survive but that works for me.

Is it OK to let the chickens out in the morning and let them be out all day (if they want?) in the rain? I haven't been doing anything differently since it started raining, they have a few dry places in the yard to be if they want to be, they hang out in the relatively dry, tiny covered run a lot..they have access to the whole yard. Do they have enough sense to get out of the rain if it isn't good for them? I feel so bad for their little muddy feet...I put one of them in a sling today and she seemed to like my body heat ;)
