I love these birds, and had a bunch when I came here to this bare land we bought.Yes, sometimes you can tell. I had a hatchery buff silkie that was a little jerk from day one of me getting them. He started developing comb and wattles at about a week. Turned into a nasty jerk.
I picked up 6 light brahmas pullets from the feed store June 22. Week later I start getting suspicious of one of the little pullets.
This was screaming Boy to me.

Everyone said it was way to early to know.
Here is Mongo now. (He didn't want to pose and is molting the worst I've seen on a juvenile getting in adult feathers)
Sorry for the phone pic. Was trying to just run out and get a current picture of him. He's a sweetheart.
Two of the 8 week old EEs have single combs. In the first week I could tell which one was a boy. He's getting a nice little comb in now.
I just posted in the new members section and was told to come here too.
Briefly: new to having chickens (new to country life for that matter). Bought a house near Yacolt, WA in July. Loving it! Learning how to care for the chickens we inherited with the property. Hoping to learn lots more on these forums. Slightly overwhelmed too.![]()
I don't think we'll make it to that show since we went to Salem. Maybe a spring show, not sure which one we're going to over that way yet.It gets worse as the weather worsens !!!!!!!!!!![]()
Coming to the Winter Brisk ?????????????
*** I'd love to talk Crele with ya !!!!!!!
I have found broodies with up to 4 eggs in each wing pit, all the while setting on up to 14~~~~~~~~~~~ all flattened out like a feathered pancake.![]()
Be careful if you pick up a broody hen, always check the wing pits first, or eggs can fall out & crack.
