We let the chickens out late in the afternoon today. A pair of deer was foraging in our yard, not caring about the three of us milling about near the house. The chickens weren't quite sure what to think. Pudge marched right up to the closest one and stood a few feet away from it. I think she was trying to stare it down.

I went to town for some groceries and received a call a short time later. They put the chickens in the pen early because mom noticed a cougar stalking the deer. So now I have to worry about two kinds of hawks, owls, coyotes, and cougars. Sometimes I envy you city-folk.

I'm a city folk owner of three former free-ranging chickens... no thanks to a pair of Bald Eagles, and some other unidentified predatory bird. My next door-neighbor's chicken was taken a few years back by a coyote, so we know those are around here, too. Cougars are, as well - police have come through and informed us to be wary of them when they are spotted in the area. City folk are not immune to wildlife. Heck, there's a raccoon living in the tree in my Cul-de-sac.

Ya know I don't often get far from home and travel a pretty limited number of trails. Today when we went to see CGG I learned how they (state) can sucker one. See going over to Gig Harbor, over the Narrows Bridge was free. BUT once they have you trapped guess what??? If ya wanna get home ya gotta pay their toll. Yup I think they have been to a few poultry shows and figured out the system. They let ya in for free. Getting out is what costs.

My SIL has a 2nd house over in Gig Harbor. They announced a toll bridge was going in just months after she bought over there. Bummer!

Added a kitchen in front

The front (kitchen) now

Like the porch with a jug holding it down (it was windy eh !)

Eeek ! Guineas on the couch !!!!!!!!!! Had to show ya this, so cute !!

Ok this is how it looks now...kitchen built on the front.
Except the side built on the right is enclosed as a brooding room.

Eeek ! Guineas on the couch again !!!

So here is the side, you you can see the original lawn mower barn...

So are we going to plan a potluck for during the show in Chehalis? I seem to remember that we keep getting flack for hosting a potluck for our group. I don't want to step on toes.

Okay newbies don't freak out, especially after talking about being a 4 H leader!! LOL I've been in recovery for 8 years!! LOL!!

Julie, yes, you need the kids first before you plan what to teach! They will all be at different levels. Kids can start as young as 5 and go thru seniors in high school. Some might be total newbies, some might have had birds for years. Most do not know anything about the SOP and do start out with hatchery birds, until they learn some stuff! Typically, we will start the kiddo's out with simple things like handling their bird. How you carry it in the barn, place it in the cage, show the wing, show the keel bone, etc. Then they learn about the breed they are working with. And as a program, each year we decide in the planning meeting, which the kids participate in, which classes to focus on. About 5 yrs ago we decided as a group to focus on one class at a time county wide. So first we did the American Class, then the English, then the Asiatic, last year the Mediterranean and this year the Continental. So all the the kids in the Poultry Program in Snohomish County (which includes I think 6 different clubs) are working on the Continental class this year and working on learning that particular class well. The kids wwho have been in for the last 5 years, should be pretty knowledgeable about all 5 of those classes. And if their bird isn't in one of those classes, they should also be studying their birds class, it's breed and other varieties.

Their are 4-H guide books that you can get also to help guide you as a leader, but we've never used them. We just use the SOP and we have a Judging book put out by the Univ of Nebraska I think that we also use that covers stuff like judging eggs, fryer parts, diseases, etc.

HTH!!!

Wow!!! See the way I understood it is they have NO poultry club, so like, if I start up we maybe the ONLY ones??? They had one years ago, but the gal retired and none of the kid's parents wanted to take it up, so the master gardener fill in now and again cause he used to show. Problem is I've only shown my Muscovy's, not much to it, so I'm gonna have to read read read!! I'm gonna call her tomorrow for more information!
Thank you!!!
