Quote: Hawthorns smell pretty bad and have red berries. The mountain ash berries are orange and the birds don't eat them until after we've had a frost. Red and falling off now sounds more like hawthorn to me.

My mom works at a stained glass warehouse. She gets her supplies there and fixes old stained glass windows that she has collected. We modified a few cabinet doors to be stained glass window cabinet doors. She enjoys stained glass work.
Now I really need to meet your mother.

Quote: Oh boy. That is actually a loaded question.Lots of conversations on Silkie threads here on BYC and on FB. Judges have differing opinions and the ABA and APA book have different definitions. But generally it is a split or space between the primary and secondary wing feathers. It's not a defect,It is a disqualification, so if you aren't breeding or showing it doesn't matter. I am going to be trying my hand at breeding, so I do not want to have wing issues to try to correct. It is the hardest thing to breed out, and then it may never be totally gone.
Interesting. I had never heard of it, but then I do not plan on showing my birds so I haven't researched it! Google brought up some good pictures. That's a shame, sorry the ones you kept are showing it.
Thank you for the information!

Quote: He's only 3.5 week old.I have no idea how good he will look as an adult. I'd like to raise him up and enjoy him as long as I can. Roosters are prohibited here, though, so he is going to have to find another flock.![]()
He came from Baxter Barn, so he is hatchery stock but I don't know which one. I bought 4 chicks from them and they are all sweet tempered and healthy. He's starting to grow in a lot of black feathers, so hopefully he will be pretty, too!

Well, you know, once again I have had my Hamburgs disprove their flighty and hard to manage reputation. When I went out to do chores, Malvina, Tegan, and Sarah were out; the wind last night had angled their cage door open about .9 chickenwidth open, and there they were. I put down a line of scratch and the baby girls went in; then I spent about 40 minutes building corral wings and chasing Malvina all over the yard before she gave up and went in. I usually just let her run until bedtime, but she is in full naked moult and I think the ravens would have gotten her.
Does anyone remember where it was that Kaneke got food-grade DTE? I had about a pound left but it's vanished, and I should get more this week.
