Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

(Note to self, go back to page 170)

Ok so I have a major problem now!!!!
Two of my chicks that I just posted pics of, they are/were four weeks old and two of them (MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES) just died yesterday. So I sat down to watch the other chicks for an hour and found that a few of them are pooping out blood! What in the world could this be? They have not been out side with my other chickens, but I did bring in a chick from outside, that was about a week older and put her in with them. Please, does any one know what this could be and what I need to give them to get them better?

Sounds like Coccidiosis -- are you using a medicated chick starter?

Can I freeze pumpkin on the shell? We have too many carved pumpkins for the girls to eat right away. We carved them yesterday, so the meat is still pretty fresh. Can I cut them into chunks, wrap the chunks up and freeze them?

Also - what is the best way to store uncarved pumpkins?
Uncarved, store in clean fresh straw in a dark cool place as all winter squashes.
Otherwise, cut it up in usable hunks, put in Ziplock freezer bags & freeze.

Coop progress update! Doesn't it look awesome???

The area underneath will be storage with doors. The three nestboxes will be accessed for eggs by lifting the slanted roof. The front will also drop down on hinges to easily scrape out the nesting material for cleaning.

Progress is slow, but this is the most complicated part of the coop.

Could anyone with an outdoor brooder post a pic? I'm thinking of putting something together so I can move my chicks out into their pen before the coop is done. I need to make something that will keep the wind out and be big enough for a lamp, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I'd love ideas from anyone who already has something like this! I'm tired of all the dust in the basement. I don't hear any more sneezing and all the birds look fine, so I think the dust was just getting to them, too. The basement is also smelling like chicken poop, and the darn birds keep jumping on their waterer and knocking it over.

My brooders are indoors, with a door outside as with any coop.
The babies can go out if they want, and come in to a heat lamp if they are chilled.
It is a good thing to offer them the heat lamp if they have no momma to warm them.
The brooder inside is 3' wide and 4 foot long...so the wee babes have plenty of room inside.

DH and I can make a weekend. DH is much more likely to be around on a weekend, than during the week.
Excellent ! I would love to see you again...and please bring T-Hi with you and that crazy duck diva !!!!

I think I forgot to post a pic of my son's Halloween costume. I'm just worn out today!

He was very cute, when I could get him to wear it!

OMG He is so cute !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss the goblins so much !!!! It makes my heart hurt~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for posting !!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a cutey !!!

That would be fun to see !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A goose going down the slide !!! And put a pond at the bottom...hmmmmmmmmmmmmm that would be fun !!
I think that would be so much fun. Except the pond at the bottom part. Slider is the least graceful animal I have ever seen and typically face-plants just stepping into or out of the plastic kiddie pool. THAT is hilarious and I only feel a little bit bad for laughing.

I've seen that done that with JP-5 when I was in the Navy. Someone brought in a bucket from draining the overflow cells on one of our F-14s. They were using it for their matches and cigarette butts until the supervisor got on them. Of course some of the stuff I saw done in the Line Shack was pretty stupid now that I think back on it.
It must just be Line Shacks because most things I saw in our's was pretty stupid too. However alot of things Marines do are not overly smart.

Sounds like coccidiosis:

treatment that I use is Corid (Amprolium) 9.6% liquid (also available in powder but different dosage), 9.5 ml per gallon of water as the sole source of drinking water for 5-7 days. If the bloody poo comes back after that, treat again for another cycle. They will eventually build an immunity to the cocci in the soil.

Mix new solution daily to keep it fresh. It is available in the cattle section of the feed store. Sulmet treats cocci too but only a couple of strains and it is harder on the chickens' systems. Treat all the ones exposed to the poop of the chick with blood. It is a swift killer of chicks and is very common.

Medicated feed helps to prevent it but they can still get overwhelmed with cocci even on the feed. You can continue feeding the medicated feed if that is what you are using. Don't administer vitamins with Corid, as it is a thiamine blocker.

You need to give them either (not both) either Corid in their water OR Medicated Chick starter.
NOT BOTH.
If you have powdered or a gallon of Corid, add that to their water.
Otherwise, give them Medicated Chick Starter.
The feed must be medicated with Amprolium...which kills Cocci bacteria which is attacking their gut.
Corid, is a name for product which is Amprolium....
Amprolium comes in "Medicated Chick Starter" such as Purina's "Start N' Grow" chick feed.
Do not give both Corid in the water AND Medicated Chick Feed.
Use only one, other wise you can over medicate.
