Well after DH put me to work this past afternoon, and worked me until well past dark. He then took me to dinner. It is so nice to sit and eat without 6 pairs of eyes look at me. It wasn't easy to get moving again after dinner. I should know better than to bend over while pulling weeds. But I still seem to do it.

We got the veggie garden all cleaned up. and I have a big row of tomatoes that are now ripping in the garden window. We finally got to eat one of the tomatoes in a salad yesterday. It wasn't bad for a purple tomato. We pulled up a few of the beets today, and I should have cooked them for our dinner. I will just have to eat them myself. DH is leaving in the morning for the rest of the week, so he isn't going to get any.

We dug up another 8lbs of potatoes, and I picked the last of the raspberries for the year. I got about 38lbs of potatoes this year. I think that it is the biggest crop of potatoes that I have ever gotten to grow. If I grew anymore I would have to figure out how to get a cold storage built. I have talked about wanting one, and DH has ignored me so far.

I potted up a bunch of Autumn Joy Sedums. I will be bring them to the Chehalis show with me. I hope that I can get a bunch of other plants dug up, and get them divided. I have a couple of different Daylilies, that I should divide. I will just have to see what I can get done in the next two weeks. I am finding that there is always a price to pay when I get to do something fun around here.


Well I just went out and did a head count on my chickens. I haven't really known for some time now how many chickens lived at my house. So after I took out some leftovers to the girls, I get my flashlight out and counted chickens. I seem to have 31 chickens. I should probably think about re-homing about 6 or 8 of the flock. My set up has a harder time handling more than about 24 chickens. I think that I am getting away with things, because I have a number of smaller birds, than I have had in the past.

That is sphagnum moss. in order to harvest it. you need to get under the plant, and cut under the very short roots. It needs to come off in sheets. You might try Google, or You Tube and see if anyone can give you better instructions on harvesting the moss. Most of the worlds commercial sphagnum moss is harvested on the Olympic Peninsula.

So is that all the same kind of moss in different stages of existence or are there different types going on there?

Goodnight? Geez girl, it's freaking morning! You gotta get on a normal schedule. I thought mine was off! The only folks I know with graveyard are folks who actually work graveyard. LOL. But thanks for keeping the night crew going!

Thanks to everyone for the input! My sister's not the type to randomly take in animals so it must have been a bad situation for her to step in. Hopefully I can get more info out of her soon. I've known a lot of wonderful pits, and I really like farm/shepherd dogs, but I'm not a fan of labs (all the ones I've known have been..well...not the brightest crayon in the box and seem to lack personality) and neither my husband or I want to take on a small yappy dog, so we'll see what we learn. She's taking her in for a vet check this week as well, so maybe the vet will have an idea.

I don't see any Pit Bull in the puppy, at least not with these pictures. The puppy will most likely be in the 40 to 60 lbs range, they are not a small dog, but no where near the size of my last dog. LOL.

Because the puppy is so young, it shouldn't have any problems with socialization issues. It will be more of the puppy not having been with it's mother long enough. Most puppies should stay with their mothers for at least 8 weeks. So that is where I would be looking for potential problems. if there are any. Best wishes if you become a puppy mom.

Hooray, the pen floor is finally done! My little "helper" helped me spread out sand and gravel in the bottom.



Now I need to get my butt in gear, drag the old monitor cage out of storage, and set it up as an outdoor brooder.

What temp should I aim for inside the brooder? A hot spot of 80? The chicks are about 5-7 weeks old.

Wow, that's coming along really nicely! You have a very cute little helper too. I think your chickies are going to be very happy there!

My DD and I and BF have been discussing getting a dog for the last couple months. Nov 3-4th they had a PetExpo at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. We have been looking at this pup online at the Grant's County Animal Shelter. Luckily they brought him along with many other dogs to the expo and we were able to spend time with him and make our decision!

We now have a new member of our family! His name is Dyson (yes just like the animal vacuum)! He IS a mini vacuum and a big bundle of loving fluff! LOL!!

He and Daffy have had an interesting time together! He is terrified of Daffy!!! We know who the pack leader is around this house!!

I've been spreading all the old shavings from the coop over the area we plan to put the garden. Hopefully that will give the dirt what it needs to do good things for whatever we plant in the spring!
We need to rototille but I'm not sure if I should do that now, or wait until spring right before we plant? This spot we have picked for the garden hasn't ever had a garden in it so it's just regular old dirt and grass right now.
Boy I have lots more to learn....it always amazing me at how much you don't know about something, until you decide to start doing it!

I would give it a good till now, remove any clumps of grass that you can, and cover with a thick layer of organic matter (newspaper, cardboard, straw, shavings, etc) for the winter.
