Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Quote: The High Tunnel is just what I described it as above and easily moved, considered temporary. In the commercial world a greenhouse is usually something a bit more complicated. It can be a permanent structure built to code. Can have a cement floor and will usually be used with benches and pots of plants or seed starting trays, can usually be climate controlled and have additional heat and light. They names can be interchangeable but the tunnel is usually used to describe a simple ground covering where crops are grown in the ground under cover.

Quote: I guess its been a while since I've been on and there are new folks here since I originally posted about it around Feb. It is like a government grant. I applied and was awarded it so the tunnel will be paid for as long as I comply with the specs and a 3 year study that I need to keep records and provide information to USDA.

FYI I just got word from the show Supt. 915 entries !!!!

I have also been told by others that this show normally has about 500.

This is dumb. I feel like I'm doing stuff right in regards to keeping things clean, checking my birds out regularly, feeding them good feed, pampering them by offering oatmeal + vitamins twice a week, yada yada. Things are clean and they're taken care of! Could there be something inherantly wrong with my backyard when mixed with chickens? If it's not been one thing it's been another, since the beginning. If it weren't for the insane amount of money we've put into this whole ordeal I swear I'd quit!

I got 4mL of molasses water into Louise. Put her in a cage in the dining room. We'll see how she is tomorrow. I'm done. Done nursing sick chickens back to health. If they're gonna die in the conditions we keep them, so be it. Ugh!!!

Just joined BYC this morning after scouring this site for weeks on end before building our first coop last Spring, so to see this thread right off is a welcome treat.......we're in Eastern Washington, Blue Mountains. Two coops......41 chickens......7 breeds.....loving it......and counting. Can't wait to meet you all.

I don't supplement vitamins other than what is in the commercial feed. Is it possible they are getting too heavy of a vitamin load. Just trying to help you come to an answer for your situation.

No. It's not much. Their egg shells were getting thin on the Nature Wise layer feed I bought them so I read Vitamin D helps with that. It did! Shells back to normal and birds seem happier. I want to just switch to Layena like everybody else on the planet, LOL! I was trying to do the "best" by buying more natural feed but seriously I think I'm done catering to the chooks. I need sanity.

Yeah, they can be frustrating. I feed mine regular chick starter/grower and offer oyster shell free choice and have a flock block( so I guess I am supplementing vitamins after all) since I have a roo and young pullets and chicks together. It is entirely possible that the batch of feed got tainted. Have you tried a new bag with different lot numbers?

I hadn't thought of that, but we've probably gone through 4 bags of feed bought in 2 different locations since the first bird died similarly to how this bird is acting now...though this one isn't as bad yet. It could easily be a yard toxin though, I'm clueless about identifying plants.
