Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Ah, phooey, CL's post reminded me: I needed to get DE this weekend, and forgot.

So: think maybe Petsmart might have it? Freddies?

I just went out and got way too much of many things: Christmas clothing for Himself and both young men, Layena (at no bargain price, alas) and two sacks of stove pellets, which I use to deal with mudpits in the yard, and dog food, cat food, and more dogfood from TJ's.

And if Himself is up to leaving the house, we still need to get to Freddie's and buy a round of stuff there. He used up his shopping oomph taking Ruby to get her tonails cut this morning, and doesn't seem to have regained any while I was doing chores or shopping.

Quote: That's how I started them--roasted with olive oil, garlic, sea salt, pepper. Sauted mushrooms and shallots in garlic butter. Crumbled crispy bacon. Mixed it all together. It was a combination of two recipes I found online, I was trying to replicate something I had a restaurant and it was very very close. So good!

While I was hanging out in the pest control section of Home Depot, I was surprised to see a bag of DE there. Do you have a Home Depot near you? Maybe Lowe's would carry it too?

Quote: I'm working hard at thinking of them, every time I see them, as small chickens. They behave like chickens, after all. But every time they stretch their wings, it trips the "pigeon" switch: they have much longer wings for their size than I'd expect, and they're much more dove shaped than, say, quali shaped.
Those are so very cute. I had one that looked a lot like those but she was white with black spots.
Quote: Oh ha sorry, I did see your Reply before that you are going. I was wondering if anyone elts.would be joining us. What time do you plan on being there?
I have nothing planned for sure, but I figured earlier would be better. My schedule is flexible if there are going to be people there to see :)

I am planning on going. And I have some quilt stuff for Sara from CL. So it would be great if we could all meet up and I could get those to you!
Well any time is good for me so just let me know if you guys need to do a specific time.

We were second offer on the house we are in. The first offer's funding fell through. Just be patient, you may still get it.

Wow that had to have been a super supprise phone call!

That would be great if you did get it...we will have to come over and do a BYC housewarming for you.

OOOOHHHHHH, when we do get a new farm, we are absolutely doing that! I have never had a house warming party, but even putting that aside it would be a great excuse to have everyone over for a Big pot luck BBQ!

Oooh that sounds fun!!! We'd all get to see your new farm and you'd score some awesome house warming gifts ;)

My girls were very pleased to be out for 3.5 hours while I was cleaning their house. Mom was doing some yard maintenance and was watching them. We found Marmalade sitting in a bush next to the porch preening. She likes it here. She was trying to menace our old poodle-pomeranian for a bit. It didn't even notice!
AAAWWWW she looks so great and happy in that little tree/bush! I am so glad you gave her a great home.
I just got back from Reber Ranch a few minutes ago. I just bought 3 50lb bags of Layena for $25!!!!! Here's why: Total was $59, minus $10 coupon; paid with AmEx card and got $25 back off the purchase (later, not instantly) because it was "Small Business" or "Shop Small" day. Woohoo!!! That's $8.33/bag, and only $0.17/lb for feed!

That is awesome! I can't wait to stock up on the 8th.

Maybe I don't need to have a house warming party when we get our new farm, but a come teach Sarah how to cook day! There are so many days that ya'll are talking about food ya'll make and I am sitting here drooling all over my key board.

DH and I set our traps. 2 sticky traps, one on the coop roof, another inside the run, and two big plastic snap traps, one in the garage and one in the coop run. DH gets up long before the birds so he'll move the traps before the girls come out. I better see some dead vermin in the morning.

Oh, and on the way home from Lowe's, DH and I were discussing what one does with a rodent if you should be able to catch one on the sticky trap because it didn't really occur to me immediately that it would still be alive but just stuck. DH says, "hit it in the head with a hammer or drop a big piece of cement on it. OR Put it in a plastic bag and suffocate it". When I balked at the idea he said, "If you can't kill the rodents, maybe you shouldn't have chickens". I'm wondering if he's still downstairs inventing different methods of vermin slaughter. After 25 years I'm wondering who I'm married to. Shiver...

Yes, I want them gone, but wasn't really relishing the idea of actively participating in their death. I can't even kill spiders.
Ohh, I don't feel so good right now...

Oh, but then I read the instructions for the sticky trap which say to wrap your catch in newspapers and toss it. That could be doable.

More progress made on the chicken coop project from heck:

The walls are framed!

It will have nice, big doors for cleaning it out.

I love how the nest box doors turned out.

Now I can start painting and adding hardware cloth while Lamont is squaring it up and bolting it together. It really needs to be done in the next 3 weeks. I don't want to think about how long it's taken so far!!!

I bet you can cook just fine. But can say that anytime this group gets together and there is food involved...... Well lets just say there are some pretty dang good cooks here.

Oh and did I ever mention I know a breeder of Fav's ? I also have them in blue and black bantam.

Ya know, I hate rats and mice as much as the next person, but I would rather put it out of it's misery than know that it is starving to death stuck to a large sticker in the garbage. But I hope you guys figure something out that you can handle.

Sadly you are quite far from me, the farthest I have driven for chickens was an hour away and I got five 6 month olds for free. If you are only about an hour (give or take a few) from me maybe I could do it or if any one is already planning on paying you a visit from over this way we could works something out.. You should let me know who your breeder is or if you have any that you are selling. Maybe I can even come up with some kind of scrap metal for ya (gotta let me know if there is any specific kind you prefer)

And no I am not a good cook. I like baking but I have to have a very detailed set of plans (that is what I call recipies) in order to do it. I can only cook about 5 dishes that are good. Other than that DH cooks most nights and man he can cook, but I would really like to be able to cook for him (and the kids) more often.
