Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Kim, sorry you lost one of your new birds. Sounds like you're learning a lot though. I may have to come over and learn from you sometime.

Jenn, I hope the little Silkie makes it.

WOO-HOOOOOO!!!! We had our first 4-egg day, and our first Easter egger egg day! Our EE's (along with our buckeye) are a couple months younger than our other pullets, as they were replacements for the girls killed in the Memorial Day weimeraner attack. I figured we wouldn't see any of their eggs until spring, but there was a green egg in the box this morning. Feeling rich today!

Yippee --- Cool!!! Congratulations!!!

Would that be the same one at Gig Harbor. There is a mini mart and fire station across the road? If so that ain't far from CGG.

Yep, that's the one. Hard for me to think of Key Peninsula as "Gig Harbor"! But that's usually the postal address they have over there. I should find out where she is. We go over 2 or 3 times a year to spend the weekend camping with our kids. Amazing that you can drive 50 feet of truck and trailer thru there to pick up feed!

Anyone needing DE can get it super cheap (yes, it's food grade) at Auburn Coastal Farm Supply. I got a 50lb bag for less than $20 a couple months ago.

It turns out that it's $21 for ten pounds at Amazon.com: since I can get to Amazon (and actually didn't get off the place at all today) I'm going with that.

I still wish I could remember where Kaneke got it in Yelm, almost as much as I wish I knew what happened after they went to Maui last February.

Ok, I'm not sure exactly what's up with the chick. Maybe her legs were just stuck together by the poo and tripped her? She's standing, turning around and taking a few steps, but it's hard to tell if she's shaky or just shy because she's alone in a box in the reptile room (which is nice and warm, and oh boy are my carpet pythons excited by her smell). Don't worry, she can't see any snakes. There are now two perfectly normal looking poos on the paper towels in her box. I gave her a little honey water with a dropper, but she quickly decided she'd had enough and started shaking her head to avoid it. I made a bowl with a mix of her crumble, some pedialyte, a little bit of honey and a little bit of yogurt. She ate a little bit but didn't seem thrilled. So I left it in there for now with a dish of honey water and a dish of crumble. I scattered a little of her food on the floor and she was pecking it up when I left.

Something was definitely up though, since she was listless and closing her eyes earlier. Do chicks and chickens often get a mysterious malady then quickly recover? I know she's not really recovered yet and needs more time and things could still go south, but she appears to be on her way to recovery. Is there anything else I should do, other than offering her food and water and keeping an eye on her?

I hope this is coherent. Every time I get up and actually do something, my head spins a bit. What a sucky time to have to deal with a sick chick. Bleah.

OHHHH.... I can just see it now... the lashing out and scratching the sides of the bucket as it drowns and tries to climb out! Oh... it's feet are stuck, no scratching! Okay, maybe that would work. I boiled a lobster once and heard it scratching the kettle.... really creeped me out!
OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Made Ya Laugh!!!!

If she looks even better tomorrow I would out her back in with the others. They really hate to be alone. I find that as soonas they are on the mend if I put them back in with their siblings they eat and drink better. I would give everyone electrolytes. I do this with all chicks especially if they came from somewhere else.
