Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hmm, here's a question. I whittled down the number of birds in the outdoor pen from 8 to 4 today (thank you Farmin Momma!!). I was planning on waiting another week or two before adding the Polish and silkies to the flock. Since there was a change to the pecking order, would today be a good day to add the Polish? She hasn't shown any health problems since I bought her at the show. I'd rather wait for the silkies until they have the new coop, but the Polish is small enough to fit in the outdoor brooder.

What do you think? Should I wait longer?

Jennifer

My favorite time to add birds is when I've changed the pecking order.

It is a nerve wracking time, no matter if you're using an incubator or a broody! But I would say, yes, just lift her a bit and check. I didn't think anything was happening until I finally lifted my girls fluffy butt and was pleasantly surprised to see sweet, happy, warm little chicks underneath her. You might wear gloves when you do it in case she decides to peck or bite you when you check though! A quick peek shouldn't hurt though...

Good luck! Happy Hatching!

Cool, Thanks. I got tough skin, and she is not a biter. Now if it was one of my BO or Reds, then I might be a little cautious. My BR's never peck me when I am after eggs. Even the broody when I go in to candle, she just fluffs and grows real quiet. I always pet them when they are on the nests to show I am not doing anything. Calms them down pretty quick. In fact my broody has often changed to a "purr" when I have been petting her after candling.

Hi, brought home a pair of Australorps from Craigs list about 6 months ago, not from breeder and would like to re-home together to anyone interested...guess about 7+ months, male & female, not laying yet. Am in Arlington, work in Seattle. Am cutting back to my favorites....Free to BYC'rs, plan to list on craigs for a fee. PM if interested, Thanks, eliz

Hi Liz... glad you dropped by.

It was really nice getting to know you in Chehalis last week.
Wish I had room for them, I love aussies, but I have a full house with just my 3 girls.

WOW, this thread is really dead! Is there something going on that I don't know about or is everybody just that busy today. Come to think of it, it has been really slow the last few weeks.
HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Hahahaha. Maybe it is us couple of Oregonians slowing you all down, since our thread creeps along at slugs pace.

I removed the spurs on a rooster today. it was suprisingly easy and no blood really and the rooster didn't even squirm. I though it was going to be hard and/or icky but it wasn't! Watched a youtube vidoe and went out and did it. One skill down, about 100 more to go!

It's amazing what you can find on youtube! May have to do AI on some of my silkies and possibly my Favs, if trimming butt fluff doesn't help! You can find how to vids on that! Unbelievable!

Just be aware that you are only taking off the hard outer covering, and it will grow back. Just like your nails do. So it's not a permantent thing.
