I had a bunch of chicks hatch today and I think that there eithier Barnevelder or Copper Black maybe even some crosses?
Wow, I thought that I put those in on Friday so that I would have a good hatch on friday.
I probibly have about 60-75 chicks now.
What am I supose to do with them?
Alot of Barnevelders, maybe 20.
Copper Blacks 16, ?
Crosses, Way to many, Has anyone ever crossed a Barnevelder with a Black Copper?
Someone besides me has to of done this.
For those who have never heard of the Barnevelder, they are a very dark layer with double plumage. Medium breed.
OVERWHELMED!!!
Lovin' it!!!

My dad lives in St Andews Grange just out of Coulie City.
I travel there quite abit.
Just let me know if I can help some time?
Welcome Aboard!!!

Eagle you are so lucky! I just checked on my chicks, the second hatched was dead. I candled the third, saw no movement so I chipped it open and it's eyes were milky, it died sometime ago. The first hatched is doing good (I think) and I put it in a brooder by itself with a little water and chick starter. I also added a really soft newborn sweater I had laying around and a stuffed cow. Tomorrow if it's doing good and up running around (hasn't yet) I'll be stopping at the feed store to get it a tiny buddy.

Ya' I have a couple of different lines.
I found some feathered legged Bev Davis. 2 pair.
I also bought a roo that is Wade Jeane line.
The same person sold me some eggs too, I have candled them and all 14 are still a go!

If you have Barnevelders that "are a very dark layer", I would like to see some of those eggs and those birds. Where did you get your stock from?

Most of us who are breeding Barnevelders are working on the egg color. According to two of the original breeders who brought them to the USA and other breeders I've talked to, at one time the Barnevelders laid an egg that was darker than a Welsummer's but today most Barnevelders lay an egg not much darker than a BR or RIR.

So I would be very interested in seeing what you have and hearing more about them.

God Bless,

Yesterday afternoon we got some lovely little silkie chicks. Thanks 4hchknmama!! They are such cute little things (see her picture in msg #1695 until I figure out how to get pics up). They stayed warm in the car trip home by cuddling up to my boys, hiding in their coats, and falling asleep. It was so cute!
Today they are doing real good. We forgot how much we worried about the week old chicks we first got though and because they are just so tiny we worry more about these just days old chicks!

Sorry to hear that. If I remember right this is your first try at hatching. I hope you have much better luck next time.
Right now I can't imagine hatching as just getting week old and new born chicks was stressful enough for us.

I have only lived her 3 yrs and hadn't heard about it. I did find references on the net to one that is on private land and not open to the public but apparently visited late at night anyway; it is east of us and east of the Maltby shops over by Paradise Valley Rd.

Oh I second that - soooo good. My kids share the Nardone Fruit Waffle and I love the Fruit Shortcake with Maltby crème fraîche. Decadently delicious! see maltbycafe.com
