Sorry to hear that. If I remember right this is your first try at hatching. I hope you have much better luck next time.
Right now I can't imagine hatching as just getting week old and new born chicks was stressful enough for us.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words. I was my first time hatching. The eggs were also left out in freezing temps before I got them, so maybe that had something to do with it. Also a few of the eggs had bloodrings, so maybe some bacteria was what did the little ones in. The chick that died in the egg still had a lot of yolk to use and the yolk was green!

It appears that I have 3 Wheaten Marans cockerels. That doesn't help me, does it? Anyone got some pullets, and need a cockerel? I only need one of these boys, but NEED some hens. I hatched these from a shipment from a fellow BYCer who got the line from Bev Davis. Maybe blend some lines? I've named them Pierre, Jean-Luc, and Henri.

Also, the RIR is most definitely a cockerel. Getting the comb and wattles already! I've named him "Jersey" because those eggs came from NJ. I'm definitely keeping him, he looks like he'll be a handsome boy and my old alpha roo is getting way too old. He sometimes loses his balance walking...

All of them are the sweetest little boys who seem to think I'm their mom. LOL. I'd hate to see any go... but I have 7 roosters already!

I don't think so!

Barnevelder
(CB): I first saw a black and white photo of these in 1975, then spent the next 15 years looking for them. The first ones that I found were picture perfect to the APA Standard, but layed a very pale, almost not brown egg (a serious defect in this breed). Should be a dark chocolate brown egg. The second flock I located looked good but didn't lay well and didn't lay a very dark egg. The next flock layed a dark egg, but layed very few eggs and had no resistance to any pests or disease. I have found other flocks and strains and have tried to improve both egg color and vigor as well as trying to improve disease tolerance. After 15 years of work crossing all of these strains, I have some nice, dark egg layers that lay fairly well. The males, for the most part, look up to APA standards. The hens still do not. Please only request these if you are interested in working toward perfecting this breed and you are not interested in showing them at this point as they are not up to show quality yet. This breed, as it stands now, is for the person who wants a calm chicken that lays a deep brown egg. Chicks $4.00 each (15) (Sold Out For The Entire 2009 Season)

This is not where I aquired mine, but you can use them if you need too.
You know where I aquired mine, [email protected]; I won them on a bid from, Eggbid.com.
This is the same info I pm you.
Now I will let it out for all time incase you need to refer back to it later.
Sorry you and your friend are having a hard time with your flocks?
NICE DARK EGGS!!!
I have included a pitcher so you can SEE what they look like, this is one of mine.

If you have Barnevelders that "are a very dark layer", I would like to see some of those eggs and those birds. Where did you get your stock from?

Most of us who are breeding Barnevelders are working on the egg color. According to two of the original breeders who brought them to the USA and other breeders I've talked to, at one time the Barnevelders laid an egg that was darker than a Welsummer's but today most Barnevelders lay an egg not much darker than a BR or RIR.

So I would be very interested in seeing what you have and hearing more about them.

God Bless,

I don't have duckling but the other day I was at the Monroe Feed Store and they had some ducklings. I didn't pay attention to what kind though. A bit of a drive for you so I'd definitely call before driving that far if you're considering it.

Last I remember they had Mallards, Khaki, Calls, and a few others.

Iron Horse in Maple Valley might. Del's in Auburn does but you should call to see when they're getting them in.

I just realized something.....Greyfields hasn't posted since January, where did he go? I must've missed something saying where he was going.

WHERE IS GREYFIELD?

we are going!! Coltin has to have his bird there by 8:30 and I think he shows at 10:00 so we will be there all day, and probably sunday also......I think some of my sons 4H club is going up to set up today.

It's going to be a big show, and some sale birds too.
