Hi all - I love the pictures and the articles! BYC makes me feel all warm and fuzzy just like my chickens. Nice knowing there are all these other crazy chicken folks out there. Although I read BYC almost every day I have been too exhausted to write. SOOOOO... in a LONG DELAYED response (scroll back about 20 pages) I own no suburbans (although I can see how one would be handy). I just live in a suburb.
I am so glad to see more articles about chickens coming out. DBF and I have been working for a month on a coop/shed for the 11 chickens of various ages that have absolutely outgrown the bathroom they are living in. This weekend they were outside hanging in a temporary dog run we put up for them while we were working. A neighbor offered us her dog kennel to use saying she didn't know we got a dog. When DBF told her it was for chickens not dogs, she was less than pleased. She informed him that a neighbor two houses behind us had to get rid of some chickens because they were bothering others (and now that she mentioned it there do seem to be less chickens over there).
DBF told her no roosters, just some hens for eggs. He told her that when the hens get all noisy it is usually because someone has laid an egg and they are soooo proud! DBF thought that warmed her up a bit.
Since we intend to do our best to keep our hens from being a nuisance to anyone and since there are no limits on chicken numbers in unincorporated SnoCo we will be fine. Which is good since this lady is nuts if she thinks she is going to have some kind of impact on my chickens. Her kid has a drum set!!!
So, nice to see today that chickens got some good press!

In other news - took nine of the girls to grandma's today. They had such a good time they refused to get out of the pet carriers when we got home!!! Grandma liked having them around too. Maybe we can talk her into chicken sitting....

We live in a suburban area in unicorperated Sno County too. We've got a rooser and not one person has complained about him, most don't even know we've got him until they walk up to our coop, lol. He's just so quite and when he does crow you can't hear him from inside and when you're outside it sounds like he's far way.

That's so cute! I took 3 of my chicks to my 91-year-old grandmother's house. She said I was just like her mother (this isn't the first time I've heard this), because her mom always had chickens, no matter where they lived.

Just found this on Craigslist. $6 is cheap (cheep?) and I'm thinking about getting a few...

I have around 50 cornish cross that will be ready to butcher in 2 weeks, 3 at the most. I am just tired of the chicken business. So, if you would like some pre-fattened chickens that you won't have to keep around long drop me an email.

Hey guys, I just read a very funny thread about homemade incubators and I want to try this one. Okay, now hold on. It's the crockpot incubator!! You just turn it on the warm setting, put a shot glass of water in there and refill it each night, keep the lid cracked a tiny bit, and 21 days later, voila! How can I resist this one?!

The only hitch is that I don't have a roo. Is there anyone near me either on Whidbey or in Seattle, Everett possibly also, who has a few cheap or free fertile eggs of any sort I could try this with?

Thanks!! I'm eager to hear back!

kristenm1975 do you have step by step instructions on how to do this homemade incubator????????? Or the website where you read it? my hubby wants to try to make 1 but same as you we need fertile eggs........

Hey nettielou, I actually read about the crock pot incubator idea here on BYC. They were also talking about using an electric skillet and a toaster oven, if you can imagine.

Sadly, I don't have the link to that thread. I was on someone else's computer so I couldn't bookmark. I bet if you did a search you'd find it though.

I heard back from her & she's willing to sell them a few at a time. DBF didn't want to risk infecting our girls (smart man) so we're not getting any. But it's a fantastic price.
