BTW, 4 months is still really great! My girls started laying at 7 & 8 months.

I'm hoping that getting chicks earlier in the spring will mean eggs faster.

My standard girls don't mind the rain but my poor banty cochin gets soooo wet. Her stubby legs are all of 2" long at most, and her belly gets soaking wet (this is why I think she has trouble with mites). She avoids the rain as much as possible.

A friend just told me that her friend had to get rid of some chickens in Sno Co not because of the county rules but because she lived in a neighborhood that had covenants on the properties and they had limits on poultry. If you live in a neighborhood you might want to check to see if yours has such covenants.

Hoping you don't!

Yikes - I sure hope not. I am not aware of any homeowner's association. Seems like that would have come up when I bought the house. I will see if I can find any covenants. Seems ridiculous to regulate chickens when all the cats and dogs drop their feces in everyone elses yard (my cats are guilty of this too so I can't complain too much). There is even a cat in the neighborhood that urinates on my house!! Why all this chicken unlove?

Hello everyone! I am in Indianola between Suquamish and Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Nebbo we are practicaly neighbors. I'm about a 10 minute drive from Little Boston.

What my family has on our 6 acres, "at the moment anyway," 5 leghorns, 2 black australorps, 1 barred rock, 2 unknown beautiful brown laced hens, 7 muscovy ducklings, 4 dogs, and 1 cat.

So far one egg yesterday and one again today...wooohoo! Now if I could just entice them to use the nest box.

A quick trivia question for all you experienced chicken ranchers, what are your chicken's favorite treat? So far I would say watermelon, they go wild.

Hey Washingtonians! Summer is coming up.. how many of you are wishing you could go on vacation? We need to get some sort of chicken sitters club going on!
We have the hardest time finding someone to care for the birds (as well as we would like) while we're away. We were checking the ads on craigslist and they are pretty limited to four-legged animals. I was speaking to my husband about this and he convinced me that I should be a chicken sitter! :)So I put an ad out. ...but then I got to thinking, maybe there are enough of us on here that would be interested in.. I don't know, at least making a list of us in the area who might consider chicken sitting.

I'm interested!

Helaine: I've had a broody cochin.. I could probably get her broody again.

ETA: oops. You don't want a surrogate, do you?

SOOOO.... been really busy. We were given 2 alpacas and a mini llama. EEEP! So far this weekend we've sold 3 dozen eggs and 3 roosters. Also, I cut about 14 inches off my hair today. Totally wild!

Wanted to know if any of you know where to buy the pine shavings at the best price?

Never have had to buy a lot with one rabbit.

Now that my chicks are in the coop I can see I will go through those bags a lot more quickly.

So far I have bought from Del's in Monroe and Monroe Farm & Feed.

Neither one had large bags to get a better rate.

I'm in the Drywall trade and drive all over from Arlington to South Center and all over the East side so your place doesn't have to be near me.

Not as important but also starter feed.

After paying for coop materials I want to save as much $$$ as possible! LOL!
