It is warming up here too...we are up to 12 this morning. Roo is even crowing....don't think I have heard him crow the last couple of mornings. Ladies are not all fluffed up and came out to drink fresh warm water and a fresh bucket of corn....they wanted out of the run to go check out the "hot spots"...I think I will wait and see if it warms up a bit better.

CL: I have been told by the tree trimmer guy this is one of the biggest willow trees in the county he has even seen. It is bigger than the willows at the State park in Conconully (If you remember them). It is approx 50 ft tall, we had 20 ft topped out of it around 8 years ago after a big wind storm blew down a bunch of trees. WE had the tree guys clean it up. DH says it is 7 ft across at the butt. All the little whispy branches are a pain after big wind storms - as per my photos.

The chickens love to eat the leaves and to dig under it. BTW, you can cut off one of the "whispy" limbs, put it in a bucket of water and it will root. Did you know that? So, if anyone wants a willow tree, I can cut you off a limb.

im not sure how to insert quotes....

yep, had a friend try this and it worked great!

1Gather a handful of chopstick-size willow twigs. Fresh branches work best; avoid deadfall. Any variety of willow (salix) will work since they all contain the natural chemical IBA (indolebutyric acid) - a natural plant growth regulator.

2Chop the willow stems into 3-4 inch pieces with clippers or a cleaver. You should have about 2 cups of clippings to make a one gallon batch of willow bark rooting hormone.

3Place the chopped willow pieces in a large container and cover with 1 gallon of boiling water.

4Allow the prepared willow bark tea to stand overnight. The longer it steeps, the more IBA will be released into the water.

5Store the willow bark rooting hormone in the refrigerator in a sealed container. Label the container.

6Soak tip cuttings into the willow bark rooting hormone overnight prior to planting in soil. The IBA will infuse into the bark and stems encouraging rooting and inhibiting fungus, bacteria and viral disease.

There is a BYC member named Danischi(lives in Israel), who has a featherless chicken. She posted about it a few weeks ago and started a bit of a dust up. They are exploiting a genetic defect in order to breed chickens that are more hardy in hot climates. For people in poor 3rd world countries.
I think they are kinda ugly, but that's just me.

Russ

Hotter climes aside...what about ultraviolet radiation ?
So they have to spray their chickens with sunblock every day ?
Seriously!
Even the humans where veils and caftans to shade themselves from the unrelenting scorch of the sun over there !

The pictures she provided showed these featherlesss chickens free-ranging under shade cloth. The information Danischi posted seemed pretty reasonable. She knows someone involved and was alloweed to take 1 or 2 home. I don't remember the details exactly. The thread got a lot of people hot with the "this is not "natural" or "right". Seems to me if I was really hungry I'd just be glad to eat. The idea was that millions of people only have accesss to non nutritious plants, and that access to high quality protein could save many lives. I guess there are already large flocks in Israel.
Fascinating, but I still think they're ugly.

Hi pongoid,

A couple of different places to see some great lighting shows are:

Leavenworth- it's just across the mountains on Hwy 2. It's a small town that is made to look like a bavarian village. They do a pretty nice job decorating the town for chistmas with lighting festivals in the evenings. It can be a great day trip. Be warned though it can be horribly crowded esp on weekends. Also fun little shops to browse in.

And the Bellevue botanical gardens. Puget Sound Energy decorates the grounds with millions of lights, mostly animals and flowers/plants. It's just spectacular. It's free but they do accept donations.
