Actually starting about mid Washington is where the snow is starting. I am almost Dead center and at the Canadian Border (chickielady - I know you know where I am)...we are getting SLAMMED .... snow right this second is whimpy and whispy, but it is grey and it is just coming and coming and piling up. Chickens are tired of it already.

No silly !
I wanted to talk about what Mother Earth said about the heritahe breeds and that they buy production breeds from a hatchery as modern production birds (like red stars) are better for eggs plain and simple.
The guy writing the article really ticked me off.
He never mentioned any benefits that heritage birds have, nor did he mention half the time you cannot raise birds like red stars in northern most states.
Certain birds were developed for certain areas, and telling the general public to buy red stars from that certain hatchery cuz they lay the best eggs is misleading to say the least.
What if someone in North Dakota reads that and orders 25 red stars ?
Anyone get Mother Earth ?
And the other two articles that I do like are the cordwood building and the solar hot water building...did you see them ?

Are you sick of it yet ?

It looks like you will have this weather for the next 3 days at least !

Oh, I am so sick of it. So is DH. He works for the city and if needed he will have to plow....he hates plowing. If we did not have kids in school....we would seriously consider "snow-birding" it. Take the 5th wheel and head to Arizona. Hmmm, can you imagine me like (what was that TV show?).....Oh yeah, Beverly Hillbillies. All the chickens in cages on top of the 33' fifth wheel headed to Arizona.

I can see it now.

In catching up I must have missed your discussion about heritage birds. I don't know much about chickens regarding this. But I know regarding vegetable gardens that heritage lines have a lot of benefits. Hardier, healthier, yummier.

Course I don't know what I am talking about, as I am not educated in this subject. I am having trouble typing because I have a cat who is insistent on staying in my lap.

Am I the only one, or one of like, three, who are going to say. . . . We got rain.

Oh and wind too. LOTS of it.

We too, same as CR...about 40 ish and drizzly, no wind here yet.
I am so glad the "storm" did not happen in the night, as if the power goes out at night I may sleep right through it, and it could come back on and I would never know my babies would be so cold...I need a power outage alarm bad !

Illia, when do you get the Shamos ?
We all want to see them !
Are they being shipped by frieght or some one delivering ?
And what flavor Shamos did you buy ??? The blacks ???

I have a friend that uses the deep litter method. I don't care for it. Don't know how big your coops are or how many chickens you have . Heres my situation I have 12 chickens. I have two coops that are both 7x9 feet with a door between them. I have a total of three roosts. The girls can sleep where they want. Under each roost I have pine shavings. on the rest of the floor I have cardboard (3 1/2 ft by 3 1/2ft). On top of that I throw hay that I pick up off the floor at the feed store for free. My girls usually poop in the shavings. I go in there everyday and just pick up the poop like rocks. Takes maybe 10 min. The hay on the floor I clean up as needed. I usually replace the hay once every 30 to 50 days. The cardboard I replace once every three months. Hopes this helps

Regarding the heritage birds discussion...I just mentioned that did DIY see it ?
Assuming he reads Mother (or some of you read Mother)
That's all...gotta go do some work~~

And I have not had time to go back through every post, but did Rainwolf post how many babies she got hatched ????

Oh, and about the slaughtered Elk, there were 12 shot, one had a few hunks of meat cut out, all were pregnant cows
