Well, my first FULL week at the vet's office. A few heart breaking moments, but some fun ones too. I have been getting to sit in on surgeries and learn to listen for heart rate and hand things to the doc (really love that). Sat in on a dog with a crazy huge bladder stone yesterday. It is all very exiciting. The best moment, this week for me: We had a parvo pup in. She was in hospital for 3 or 4 days. By the last day she was doing really-really well and was going to get to go home. She was off the IV and was eating well and holding it down. She had a caution sticker on her cage as she was bitey. The last day she was standing up in her cage, whining at us, watching what we were doing, wagging her tail. Well, everyone left for lunch...but ME, the younger/newer vet, and the receptionist. I got to thinking, hmmmm, parvo pup's mon and dad are suppose to come right around when everyone gets back from lunch, what if they come early? I asked the vet what the protocol/procedure was for parvo pup and how to handle her. The vet no sooner got done telling me, when over the intercome comes the "voice"....can some one bring up "parvo pup" (not her real name - but I won't say for confidentiality). So I go in the room, put on what I am suppose to. I open the cage, I am moving slowly and talking in a calm slow manner to Parvo pup. She has a towel/blanket in her cage. I go to pull on the towel/blanket, so that I can get her back end towards me and I can pick her up safely. As I am gently pulling the towel/blanket toward me, Parvo Pup leaps into my arms and wraps her front arms (legs) around my neck and (I swear) squeezes..."Don't let me go...I want to go home". Well, I took her out to Mommy and Daddy, carried her out to their car....she lept from my arms into theirs and was so happy to see them and was so nice and lovey to me. She was a Chiuhuahua (sp?), and I think she was bitey because she was scared and didn't feel good....but it made me feel so warm and fuzzy to see her healthy, leaving and doing so well, and she was so cuddly to me and trusted me. I know I will get bit some day. But that was the BEST day this week. That pup went home happy and healthy.
