It seems to me,that when I was a kid (100 years ago), we had a stump with 2 nails in it. The nails where not pounded in all the way and they were close together. Stick the neck between the nails, head on one side, body on the other. This may not be accurate....but I know we did something like this, but like I said it feels like 100 years ago.

We did the same thing only we attached a wire from nail to nail to hold the head down then chopped it with an axe.

Now that is a good idea !

I do eat some wheat carbs (I follow the Suzanne Somers low carb plan), yesterday's breakfast was a big bowl of Grape-Nuts with fat free skim milk. I'm "weird" though...my family has always eaten them with hot coffee poured over top and just a bit of milk to make them "creamy", Grape-Nuts make an awesome hot cereal! My grandmother fed it that way to my Mother and all of her 9 brothers & sisters, maybe because coffee was cheaper than the milk in the 40's & 50's (or 10's, 20's, & 30's), lol.

I used to adore grape nuts and KASHI and muesli and cream of wheat...til I found out why I was so sick...
On that note, DH was watching me read up on the cauliflower pizza...But first a bit of history: DH was raised in pizza parlours, namely Brahauben Pizza in San Bruno-Milbrae borderline...his Dad bought it when we were babies...and then he opened a franchise oftake-it-bake-its named the Brick Oven..and had a partnership/was a founder of the Round Table chain.
So to have to eat wheat free pizza is difficult for him.
He is a gourmet pizza conisseur (sp?)
OK moving back to the story of the cauliflower pizza: He saw it, and you mentioned brussel sprouts, and I was laughing...he said why don't you girls make a cauliflower pizza crust, top with cheese, sliced brussels sprouts and shredded broccoli, with sauerkraut on top ?

That was so funny!
We laughed for 2 or 3 hours...even after we went to bed and all was dark and quiet I busted out laughing!

Holy Moley! I just caught up on everything.... Now I won't remember what everyone was sayin!

lol

I missed meeting with JB, pongoid and T! :-/ lemme know next time!

The butcher stump method is what we used to do too when I was a kid. Then the chicken would run around the yard headless. Quite the thrilling gross out for kids...

many sads! Haha

Ok, no one else is here but this is the best time for me so I'm hi jacking. So excited I finally got my seed order in, the big one anyway. Now just need a few small orders and my potatoe order. I am also ordering sweet potatoes from Sandhill Preservation. Going to try them for the first time. Anybody else done Sweet potatoes? It's actually possible here from what I read on their website. I'm working on growing more storage and winter crops.

jbear, didn't get through posts before I found out your starter is the Amish one so I guess I'll start my own for this Moonshine cake. Going to the store today to get the fruit and all. I'll let you know when I have extra starter. We can meet. It sounds fun. Fircrest is much closer that Ellensburg! The camping get together sounds fun but E WA is too far.

Thorp may be even too much farther for some but one place we used to go for Back Country Horseman and AQHA horse rides was the old Stuart Anderson Ranch, they call it Springwood now. It has a big (maybe too big) open air meeting hall with a kitchen and bathrooms with showers. Tons of room for tents and trailers. Great trails for hiking. It borders the John Wayne trail and there is a big river that runs along the trail. Can't remember the name of the river. Really nice place. They have big green lawns and activities like horseshoes. Have no idea of the cost though. Might be a bit much.

Chicky, let me know if your compost turns out different being covered!

Thank you for the idea about the long handled pruning shears. I hadn't thought of those one. I had thought that I needed to use the hand held ones. I am very sure that the long handled shears will help my distaste for really doing the deed.

I am going for the shears next time as well...but I HATE that crunch.....(shiver!)

It reminds me of last summer when I was mowing the grass down the hill by DH's man fort...and I saw a critter running in the tall grass in front of the mower so I stopped and hollared at DH...I thought it was a snake and did not want to run it over, but DH looked and it was a vole and he STOMPED it! The cunch is still in my head, yuck !

A Java cockeral, a Java pullet (very camera shy) ad a Cuckoo Marans...no one wants their picture taken this morning...

I have all my seeds, I have to go on a grden/green house supply web site and order 6" pots.
I did the little peat pots last year and they are too small for the 2 mo of growing that has to happen indoors here in Western WA.
I have not put the plastic on the green house yet...I am going to undo the PVC on the top and frame it in with 2x4s and install the wavy clear fiber glass panels this year.
A guy next door to me Mom and Dad has one and it has lasted years and works really good.
Snow slides right off...has a great potting bench on 1 side, and "windows" to open when it gets hot.

The compost is in a big 6 foot by 6 foot raised bed, and I covered it with a tarp, and so now it is a fish pond.

(It was not quite full of compost)
It will leak out though...
Well, better get some work done,

Illia so sorry for the green house!
I know you were so excited about getting it going...

Cheryl I am looking for a quick bread recipe for banana walnut that uses baking soda like the old recipes for banana bread, but gluten free.
I am sure the GF web sites will have some, I try Gluten Free Girl sometimes although her recipes get awfully complicated.
It is sooo windy here !

Edited to add: See the RIW were very busy pulling the pink insulation out from behind the nest boxes ????
No other birds do this !
barnie.gif

I had to take it all out where it was reachible by them...goofy birds.
They are almost 5 mo old and still peep and still will not roost! Big babies!
And another thing: Is it just me or does anyone else think the RIW hens look so much like Chanteclers to me ?
