A CSA box is getting a box, or share, from a local farm. Community Supported Agriculture. We use www.fullcirclefarm.com. I think they serve a lot of the state now. I know they just added Spokane and Thurston counties. They also serve Alaska. I only know and remember that stuff about Native American words in English because its what I do for a living (science and education for native communities).

Parsnips smashed with butter and brown sugar....OH YEAH Parsnips peeled with a carrot peeler and diced and steamed or in beef stew with carrots, taters, corn, onions and tomatoe base..crusty bread..OH yeah!

Wasn't sure if it was still there. Thought I remembered that they were thinking of closing it and selling off the collection, a couple years ago. I drive right by it on the way to work, maybe I'll make it in to see now.

I did a winter CSA one winter. I had 6 families. There are lots of small farmers doing CSA's. Full Circle is getting a little industrialized. One of the ideas of the CSA is to get to know your local farmer and support them, even volunteer on the farm and see where your food is coming from. You pay up front for your share of an entire season, that way the farmer has start up money for seeds, etc. Then you reap the bumper crops or the crop failures due to weather or pests etc, everyone takes part in the sucesses and risks. It also gets people used to eating seasonally. CSA's like Full Circle will buy outside the farm, especially in the winter, which is why they have kiwis but the original idea was LOCAL produce and to not be buying food that was shipped in. Most small farms that offer CSA's only have them for spring, summer and fall since local produce in winter is scarce but more and more farmers are working on year round and PARSNIPS are super hardy! There are carrots, beets, cabbage, brussel sprouts, potatoes that all can be stored for distribution through the winter. Also winter squash and storage onions. Fun stuff!

I decided to order a CSA box for next week. I've wanted to for a long time. I ordered from a farm in Stanwood, my niece has a box delivered once a week so we'll see how this goes. I believe there is some parsnips in the box. If I don't like them I'll feed them to my daycare kids,they love all veggies.
