Ya know it has been a family traditon in my Mom's side of the family. She was raised on a farm in N. Dakota. Then when I was a teen she had chickens, ducks and a pig. We tried having bunnies but that never lasted long. Guess who fed them every day???

My husband and I have had chickens a couple times before but would then move to an area where we couldn't keep them. Now we have a half acre and we have a garden, a pond and my wooly rabbits and now chickens.

My chicks sure are growing fast, I have had them almost a week as of tomorrow. We had a pen given to use that was used for phesants a few years. It has a coop area plus a run so I think we can outfit it for the chicks we have. Of course if the chicken bug bites we may need to get a bigger coop later.

Hi Moureen,
Thanks for the personal replies from others and you. I wish I had my dog, she died last month. She kept the deer out of the garden and she loved the chicks. I can't get another dog until I'm back from summer travels.

If ya like chickens, how can ya not be a nice person!?! I think other people think we're crazy when we talk about how cute and wonderful the chickens are. Then they see how sweet chickens are, they start to understand.

I worry about those little gals out in the coop at night, sometimes wishing I could sleep with them (not with all that poop and dust!), but I'm going to get a coop cam to spy on them.

I'm still waiting for the aviary to be finished. Getting workers to finsih what they started is a big pain out here. Everyone is nice, but busy with other things, non-commital, etc. The girls are dying to get out, but I can't let them out unless I'm right with them. There are barred owls, eagles, red tails and osprey flying over all the time. I don't know if the owls are a threat though. I've seen coyotes during the day around here and a few raccoons only at night.

Have a nice rainy day everyone. - L

Hello Washingtonians,

Anyone in the Seattle/Eastside area want to go in on a chick order later this summer? I want to order some Welsummers and Barnevelders, possibly some Araucanas/Americanas. Let me know.

After finals and a trip to Oregon, I will be reducing my flock. Maybe around July. I want to keep them but I can only keep so many when I will be 300 miles away. What I think I have convinced myself to sell is a RIR, a BR, and a spash cochin cross. They are all into their second year of laying. But I haven't yet fully let go of them so... maybe check in later.

Hi I just found this thread ~
I live in Bellingham. In an old part of the city. In fact I just read the other day the second oldest neighborhood in Bellingham.

There's quite a few flocks in my hood. This is my first year...
and would l like more chicks?????

Hi everyone! My wife and I live near Nine Mile falls, just north of Spokane. We are actually on a plateau above the Spokane river on Four Mound prairie. We have seven acres, and small barn that used to house goats. It may again some day! We have been raising chickens for a little over two years, and are learning more every day! We have eighteen birds, RIR, leghorns, Americaunas, Welsummers,Wyandottes.and lloks like one of our new pullets has turned out to be a cockrel, which is fine with us!

Hi I'm new to the boards. We don't have chickens yet but our landlord gave us the okay yesterday so I am on a mission to build a coop! We live in Vancouver, WA but grew up in Leavenworth, Wenatchee area and have also lived in Seattle and Cheney (near Spokane). Anyone else in the Vancouver area?

I'm in Seattle... I haven't had chickens for even a month yet and have already met so many other people who have them! My sis and parents live in Bellingham and it was my sister who got me into the idea of chickens. We are supposed to keep only three in the city limits, but I have four. I wish my coop had been constructed to accommodate even more... it's an addiction, isn't it?
