So the juvenile chicks taht I have out of our shared hatch, I am pretty sure are also all Wheatons. I don't see any blue in the wings or tails at all...

As for the hatch! I now have 1, 2nd gen Olive egger out!

Am I gonna be able to tell them all apart?

HA HA, that is why I use hatching baskets. They will look just like the Ameraucanas until 'puberty' and then the pea combs swell just a slight bit higher on the OEs, and some of the OEs will have the feathered shanks from their Marans Mother to tip you off, other than, waite til they lay!

Thats just fine with me. I plan to grow them out to about 5 months. So should know who is who by then. lol I should also know for sure by then whos a cockeral and whos a pullet. lol At least thats my hope.

You quit caffeine and nicotine at the same time!!!??? That's a huge undertaking!!!! I'm rooting for even harder now!!!!

I did it AND had a FULL hysterectomy...so BAM! NO estrogen either!
THAT is why I left CA & moved up here before I killed my neighbors!

I got hormones now....

Talk about an unhappy screaming &%@$%!!

It's a good thing I'm only dealing with hormones(I'm bad enough on those)...can't imagine me trying to quit anything addictive. Scary picture!!!

Im doing amazingly well. Much better than I thought I would do. And I'm doing it alone. My DH is having a hell of a time quitting, but he's been smoking ALOT longer than me.

a couple days old you can wing feather sex.
After that, watch their combs.
Cockeral EE will have 3 rows of bumbs on his comb, a pullet will have 1.
Wings with 2 distinct rows of feathers =pullet, One single row of wing feathers all the same length=cockeral
Outside of that, combs will swell wider & redden on cockerals.
Cockerals as a general rule, are bolder than pullets.
Hope this helps.
There are links on BYC to sex by wing feathers .

I looked. I think my little chick is a cockerel.

I am waiting to see if I have a little roo myself

now they were all SUPPOSED to be pullets, the store didn't get any straight run chicks except for the bantams
and this is definitely not a bantam !! at a month old, pretty close to crow size, definitely at least fat-robin .. LOL

also --- seems to be coming in black-and-silver ... which someone told me was also indicative of roo-ish-ness
everyone else is a variant of brown barred, with blonde, gold, or rusty orange necks

the girls are starting to look so much alike, I will have to leg-band them to tell apart, I fear ...
luckily DH has a bunch of colored zip-ties that he uses to ID the wiring for his electronics stuff

DH took pix today, now to see if he can upload to computer and then I can send on to photobucket or flickr
(if I can remember my passwords ---

Wanted to say Cheryl you will be able to tell OE from Ams by the feathered legs the OEs will have due to the BCM mother they had.
And you can sex them long before 5 mo.
The will be laying then..

Also wanted to say I have this trio of LF Lemon Blue Cochins for sale, very sweet birds, but have to make room for the Bucks, Rocks & Javas.
Anyone interested PM me.
They are RFF birds, very poofy & sweet, rather quiet & keeps to themselves, slow moving and do not eat too much at all.

I ended up with 5 Cuckoo Marans cockerels and 2 pullets. Did I remember someone mentioning the the colder the weather when the eggs are fertilized and laid makes for more boys? Curious if that could be true.

Only certain breeds can be wing-feather sexed at 24 - 48hr old. I'm unsure about the brabanters...
