The streams that run under Ribary Way have been a torrent all day, even as early as 8 am. I got a call at 4pm. DD, who is 9, decided to ride her scooter home when the bus driver told her it could not go on the bus. Why did she not call? Why did the school let her go the 5+ miles home by herself in torrential rains and high winds? She stopped at my work. My boss told her that little girls should not be out riding scooters in such terrible weather. He did not call me either. Thank God she tripped over a fishing rod sunken in a puddle near the Snoqualmie River. She tripped, breaking the scooter and landing in the puddle. she walked from there to the Chevron at the I-90 exit by the outlet mall to use the phone. Had she not tripped, she would have reached the torrent in another 1.5 miles (I have photos, but unable to post). I don't think she would have realised the shoulders are likely washed out, and the water off the sides is at least waist deep. (3 years ago, the channel it cut through the asphalt was 10 FEET deep! If she made it through the torrent, she would have had another 1.5 miles and 540 feet elevation gain in some of the worst weather I've seen here.

WHAT were ANY of them thinking?.....OMG. How scary.

oooooooh I would be livid! that is not right and no way would the school and bus driver get off lightly!! glad she made it home ok.

The school bus does not even drive over the floodwaters, they take them in around the back side up Cedar Falls Road when it floods. I'm going to write a letter this evening and bring it to the principal, the superintendant and whoever is in charge of the busses. There was a communication breakdown somewhere. I can't image anyone would say it is okay for her to go home by herself! If I have a letter, they will have it in writing and can't brush it off.

Write the letter tonight....get all your emotions on the paper. Then reread it in the morning, when you are clearer headed, that way if you need to reword or reorganize you can. You don't want to go in their half-cocked. You want to show them you are angry, upset and want to know how they could let this happen and the danger your DD was in....but level-headed so you don't come off as some whacked mom. Have a game plan...stick to it...get your point across. Don't let them blow you off, go as high up the "ladder" as you have to to get your point across. Good luck.

Okay, DH told me go and look for a candler. I tried using a little flashlight and I was able to see some darkness in the eggs. We are at 10 days, many of the eggs have a large portion that is very dark...I can not really tell from my little flashlight, I do see some veining...but again, hard to tell. I was definitely able to cull the ones that were not fertilized. These are some eggs of my own hens. But the lilttle flashlight and using my hand to focus the light is just not working well. What do you recommend as the best?

I would storm down to the school district office with your hubby and make a lot of noise...and contact your school counsel member as well. This is outrageous. They are responsible for the safety of the child first & foremost. No excuses, scooter or no scooter.

Not Yet - the school office closes at 4:30 and it was nearly 5 when we got home. DH and I will go to the district office firt thing in the AM. I am writing a letter now that I will e-mail and bring in in case I am still so mad that I can't speak. My blood is still boiling, so I am reading happy posts to try and keep from shaking.

I don't have a photo from today, but this is from earlier in the year, and the street looked much the same: Thank God she never made it that far! her bus usually arrives at 10 after 4, she called at 3:58. If she were late, I would have assumed that it was because the bus took the back route due to the floods. She comes home quite late then, as she is dropped off at a different school to take their bus, they drop all those kids off, and then take her in the back way, and she gets hom at 4:40 when the road is flooded. I don't like thinking of what could have happened in the mean time had she not stopped at the gas station.

I asked her for more details before she went to bed and it gets worse. She told the duty in charge that she was going to ride her scooter home (new duty who we don't know - she does not know where we live. Usually the principal is out overseeing the lines, but he was out this afternoon). Duty told her to go slow since the weather was terrible. She decided to go by my work in case I was still there (she forgot it is Wednesday and she had her harp lessons ... I leave early on Wednesdays to tune the beast). The man she saw was NOT my boss. He was some guy smoking a cigarette outside of a bar between the school and my office! (the smoking area is the sidewalk that she would have to pass on). He asked her what she was doing out in such terrible weather and told her that little girls should not be riding scooters in such weather. Then he told her he thinks he knows who she is. She said she did not talk to him, but kept going. She assumed he was my boss becasue I told her he is tall, old, has grey hair and reeks of cigarettes but he is very nice and he likes to talk.

Make a candler.
if you have a small LED light, the light opening needs to be the size of a quarter. (home depot / harbor freight)
Then get 2 of those gaskets or hose washers and some electrical tape.
Tape the 2 washers/gaskets to the edge of the light so you have more depth between the lense & the egg when you candle, and the egg should be able to rest snug on the rings. Now you can candle away. It is bright as heck & hthe birdie inside will move away from the light....at least it will boogie woogie inside. So you know it is alive. I haven't figured what the status of hte birds are when all I see is a solid dark mass up to the air pocket. Dunno. To me the moving ones are the live ones and the non moving ones are the bonuses.
Now the clear ones with no veins at all, those are the bombs.
I put those in a double zip lock bag.

But don't listen to me...this is only my 6th hatch.

maybe its because i come from a science background and understand things but plants have been selectively breed over thousands of years. this is just about the same thing but done instantly in a lab

Sounds good in theory but when you just stab int eh dark and insert genes that may or may not act in a manner that is nontransferrable or controllable, it is not good. I have a firend that is a geneticist and also one that is a bioengineer and it was explained to me like a subroutine from a software program taken out and inserted into anothe rprogram without knowing the whole program of either one. A shortcut is one way tyo make it more palatable, but progressively developing it has not introduced any pesticide resistance weeds has it?

I also tissueculture at home. Its pretty cool how we can take a food item, soak it in chemical hormones, make it divide like crazy then eat it. I only do ornamentals, most likely the potatoies and carrots will metabolize the checmicals they are grown in but Id rather grow my food teh old fashioned way, the safe way.

Id be ticked about the bus letting my kid walk in that too, or even letting them walk period. The driver could make them leave it at school. I see the drivers at my school smoking across the street, bouncing the busses to mak eth ebrakes squeak to annoy the other drivers that are talking, etc. The drivers here need a safety refresher course.
