I have a co-worker that is wanting some birds for her young kids to work with in 4-H and something to take to the fair every year. She's still "shopping" but didn't want the LS when I told her they have to be kept clean.

She's very novice and still learning but I suggested Orps and have her a few sites to check out....so maybe she'll be interested.

Are the orps a good starter chicken for a kid? DD still is talking about having her own birds. We are still studying.

If she is young I would start with a bantam, easier to get arms around, carry around, etc.

I am bringing a tabletop plucker to Stevenson to sell. It's a multiple fingered manufactured version of the redneck plucker. Works good on chickens,.. but when I was butchering geese/ducks I could have used more power.

Many of the larger breeds are more docile. A bantam is easy to ahndle just amke sure its not a flighty breed. Light sussex (any sussex), orpingtons, and the likes are generally docile and easy to handle as far as temperament goes. Also a lot of it is also getting them handled a lot as chicks and gettign them used to be being handled. When you open their cage or pen give them feed from your hand first thing to get them to tcome to you more readily.

they are pretty docile birds but the bbs are huge. I have seen some kids packing them around though. could maybe get some opinions form others who have used them for juniors, 4H. if she chose to go with orps and I had something that would fit the bill, she is welcome to it.

Thank you much. I will let you know. I will see how "in to this" she gets. "mauling" the chicks in the bathroom lasted about 10 minutes (luckily for the chicks, LOL). I like the big "fluffy" chickens....she is liking the skinny tall bantams.

I bet someone picked him up, he's a cutie..

... he isn't the one that is missing. Rufus is missing he is a carin terrier (think Toto) mom saw the really big coyote this morning. i fear Rufus ran into him.... cos i hiked everywhere saturday and couldn't find anything or prints.....

Charlie is my couch potato. we still have him (no one would want him... when he gets bored he de-stuffs our couch.... we have many WSU blankets covering the couch because it is so old and dog destroyed.... and the funny part is mom told me when they were recently looking for a new couch dad sat in one and said "Shasta wouldn't like this"..... and it would have to be big enough for 3 dogs and 2 people..... with high backs for the little dogs to sleep on......
