I was on ebay (just looking - not buying) and looking at "chicken items" - farm related....and I saw lots of those rubber finger thingys on there for sale...I couldn't tell you how much they were, didn't think to notice.

QUESTION FOR ALL CHICKEN PROS: Okay, when does a momma hen (for lack of a better word:) "wean", kick to the curb, cut the strings, Asta' La'Vista, etc, her chicks. I just want to have an idea when she is going to cut them loose.

if anyone else needs an old washing machine to turn into a plucker, I have one sitting out back -- the fellow who was supposed to pick up the "junk metal parts" never showed up -- actually it was working when removed, it just didn't drain properly

I had to slice 2 toes that were fused. It was turning my stomach at first but was no big deal in the end. Won't bother me to do it in the future but hopefully won't ever have to do it again. Now I just need to learn how to capon! I think I could do it!

The one we borrowed for use, ages ago, had that stretchy yellow rubber tubing that physical therapists use for stretching exersizes? I think it was an FFA class project, but the person we traded a light feeder steer for forty over-age fryers for owned it, and loaned it to us for the freezer party.

There is a step by step thread on BYC on how to caponize.
I will not waste my time on that.
Cockerals uneeded go into the freezer for soup & rooster pot pie.
Meat birds will be raised for meat.
Sounds like you did a great job on the toe seperation.

I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination but in my observation of the thousand bantie army that held the farm for a couple of decades, hens stop caring much about what their chicks get up to at about the time they start to exhibit clear secondary sexual characteristics/ at the time the hen gains back sufficient weight to set another clutch of eggs. These were pure feral mutt banties, with a high fraction of game fowl genetics, so take that observatio with a big chunk of salt.

Also, in case you haven't observed this already: evil grammarians are made to diagram my sentences in Hell.

Went to your website and looked at your Seramas. Also learned that you are in Chelan...I am in Omak....

I am getting some Seramas from Jbear for my DD to play with/show. I am hoping that she will join 4-H with them and do some showing. I am excited to get them. I will need to do some talking with you some time. Went to Wenatchee today...it was so warm there compared to Omak. Very nice. Hope you had fun in Stevenson.

Hi!

Hi! Have fun with the Seramas. They are wonderful little birds. We might have to talk sometime. Wenatchee is much warmer than Chelan right now....brr. How many Seramas are you planning on getting?
