what is zipped?

I'm catching up so don't know if someone answered this yet....

Pipped = chick poked a hole in the shell
Zipped = chick cracked a line around the shell to kick off top (tends to look like a zipper

)

there are a few more terms used a lot such as:

Shrink Wrapped = Incubator was to dry and after the chick pips the membrane dries up around the chick and shrinks tight so they can not move enough to zip. Thus killing the chick by binding them tight and they can't breathe.

Drowned = Incubator had to much humidity and when the chick pips the inside membrane where the air sack is... instead of air they get water and drown before they can pip the shell.

and I'm sure there are many more terms I'm just not thinking of right now

Update on chicks hatching... the last two did not pip and stopped moving. after 24hrs of no movement I cracked my BO x RIR egg and found a hole in the tummy.. the yoke was gone but looks like it never closed up and they bled out. The Spritz chick was fully formed but never absorbed the yoke. First time I've seen a fully formed chick with a full yoke sack... looks like it could not absorb the yoke for some reason.

So of my small hatch I got 1 EE, 1 BO x Jersey Giant mix and 1 spritz chick.

Somebody else has a Bday !! Happy birthday Hallerlake.

Sure glad you didn't catch wind of the fact that I just had one! If you tease me about being 50, I might go ask my kids for that straight jacket!

Now take a deep breath, and tell that little girl that you love her no matter what!

That's Awesome!! Glad you MIL took the initiative to speak to someone else about it! Not tshat this is exactly the same, but, as a vet tech I've seen a lot of us on various types of animals. Our machines aren't always as elaborate, but, I can tell you they can be very hard to interpret and it takes lots of practice and sometimes years to get really good at it. So, I can't even imagine what it would be like with a baby. I've had two myself, now full grown, and not without some difficulty's along the way. I love my kids, no matter what!! Anyway, it's a very good thing that you got a 2nd opinion and I'm sending prayers to you and your husband for a nice healthy baby girl!!

Thank you!

Since I thought I saw a mite on a couple of my hens, I completely emptied and scrubbed out the hen house fro the 4th time since we built it 2.5 months ago (I scrape off the roosting bars and scoop poo from the floor and poo boards several times a week and change the nest boxes about every week or two). I now have used up nearly 4 bags of white shavings since February. I scrubbed the walls, floors, and nest boxes with disinfectant, sprayed everything with MannaPro poultry protector, including the hens, added new shavings, and sprinkled everything with mite dust. Then I picked up and inspected all my hens, and I can't find any of the mites that I thought I saw the other day. All that work was probably not necessary, oh well. I saw a total of 4 mites on 2 or 3 birds the other day, but the hens were out in the garden rolling around in a dirt hole that my dog had dug. Maybe it was bugs from that. Oh well. The shavings place must love me. I was paying $15 a bag at Ace but recently saw The Grange sells them for $10. The hens always enjoy rolling around in the new shavings!

The barter fair went well....I sold some duck hatching eggs and my MIL sold her extra Australorp roo....and I bought a goat.

A registered, Boer doeling, born in January. She's REALLY cute. I am going to breed her next year and sell the females and butcher the males. I think. LOL
