Me too I want to see.

C'mon, let me see...

Hey Ron sorry that you have coyote problems. It is OK for chickens to be not free ranging. Yes they like it, but it doesn't sound like the danger is worth it. You could in time increase the run size, if you think that the birds aren't getting enough exercise. Though that the run you have is more than adequate. If you compare your birds to way that commercial birds have to live. Your birds are living in luxury in comparison, even if your birds are never allowed to free range again.

If you find that you have to re-locate your birds to new homes, I will understand. But I would still want you to come to the party. Christina

Ron. You have a dog? If not something to think about. Not only are the right ones great protection for your family but they will soon let all predators know your place is off limits for free meals.
Has to be a big dog. Something that if the need comes up it can take on a big animal or intruder.

Even with a dog yes if the dog is in the front yard and chickens out back you may lose one but after a while most animals knowing it will be a fight to get the dinner will move on to easier prey once they discover your dog roams the property.

Remember this about security. The right kind of dog can put more fear into a person than a gun.
A gun can miss. Dogs don't miss.
Neither do they stop coming at the intruder if he has a gun like a home owner would.
That is why if you ask any career criminal what they fear most the honest ones will tell you a dog.
Not the kind you can boot but a LARGE dog who earns his keep beyond just yapping.

Sorry to hear about your coyote problems Ron. Greg is 100% right about the dog. My Reba chases everything off. She's not always out with the chickens, but "stands guard" a lot by the sliding door that faces the field the 'yotes come from. The steers that weren't suposed to be here anymore (anyone want to buy some beef?) also chase the coyotes and when all that fails I keep a .270 by the back door.

Yes I have a dog, Ansd she is the reason that as I sit here and type, I have tears running down my cheeks and my heart is breaking. We have a 13 year old GSD we have had her since she was six weeks old. for about six months we have noticed when we walk sometimes her right hip would give out and she would stumple just a bit.. Well last night she was in my daughters room about 50 yds from our house. My daughter called me crying to come and get Kala she couldn't stand up. . I had to carry her to the house. when she got in the house she seemed ok. but this morning she was walking like she had a stroke. her back legs were way out to try and steady herself. The vet said it could be nerve damage. Could do an MRI, but would have to put her out. maybe surgery would help but NO guarantee. we are talking over $2,000 and NO guarantee, I just can't afford to do that and then lose her.
Right now she is out laying by my daughter watching the chickens, so I need to get out there. Might prune a tree while I'm watching the flock
I will write more on my dog after dark tonight.

I am so sorry your dog has this problem, I had the same problem with my hip in the last year and you what works joint supplements and calcium. But if she has had a stroke thats not going to help that problem.

Ron, I'm so sorry. I love all my critters and can't really imagine life without them, but everytime it gets close to goodbye I ask myself if it's worth it. It's so hard, my heart goes out to you.
