Are your Bantam SQ ?
The main problem I see is the distance. I am about 80 miles away and that would make for some costly egg layers. I have a few RIR LF and am not very fond of them. While they are good layers they are not very calm birds. My RIR bantams are just awesome. Almost too much. They won't get out of the way and if not very careful they will follow ya right out of the coop/run. I got my 3 from Jim Volk who from what I was told got his start from Jim Lucas. Jim L birds came from New York.

Thanks! If we can find a free used one that would be great!

Thanks everyone! I'm hoping we can find a free one to replace the stolen one rather then shop for one but I've been watching Craigslist for walkers to maybe find a free one and also to catch them if they are stupid enough to post it for sale on CL.

I am thinking of stealing some coop space and dividing it off to make 2 sides. The coop is 8x8....I way over estimated it before. I would like to steal about 3 x 8 ft on one side for 3 or 4 bantam cochins and the other side (5 x 8) for 13-14 big birds. My question: Is 5 x 8 space big enough for 13-14 standard size birds (BR, BCM, Orps). I have a decent size run, the run is approx 8x30-40 ft. I am putting in poop boards and raising the roosts. Under these will be nesting boxes. The roosts are approx 3.5 feet off the ground. Off the 5x8 coop, there is a covered 8x8 area (hard roof), which I actually have landscaping material stapled to the sides to enclose the area to keep out wind and rain and then the remainder of the run (which is more open). They just sleep and lay in the coop.

Is this enough space for this many birds? I don't want them stressed. I am just trying to better utilize the space I have before deciding whether or not I need to build a small coop for the bantams.

How do I figure out how much space a bird needs to properly house them?

Your poor son. He is being strong, for you. Do you realize this? I am glad he is being strong, but he is hurting. I hope that he and his dad can some day mend fences, but his dad is being selfish and childish....your son is being the ADULT!!!!! I can feel for your in laws, it does put them in an akward spot. Direct your venting to us...that way you get it off your chest. Take your son's advice, do not waste any more of your emotional energy on this person. Your son has decided to walk away...you need to too...it will not be easy. How old is he? teenager. he has enough junk going on in his life right now, just being a teenage boy.

He is 16 , and the strongest most amazing teenager I know! He has his moments like all teenagers, but then he will do or say something so grown up or truly understand something deep and I go, WOW. He doesn't blame me for what his father has done to him. He realizes that it is all his dad. So I am grateful for this. Hopefully I won't have anymore issues with his dad.

Considering the petty garbage some teens are putting their folks through, your DS sound like a truly great kid! He obviously does not get the quality from his father, so it must have come from his mum! Way to go, Mum! I hope it gets easier for him very soon!

I have been told 3-5 sq ft of inside space per bird. The smaller # for smaller birds and more space for very large birds like LS and English Orps. But maybe with your large run you can fudge it a bit?
I got this free dog house and after the big coops are done it is going to be my bantie coop. It was pretty easy to convert. Maybe you could do something like that? Hope this helps!
