Waite a few days, depending on breed as some fledge faster than others.
When the wings fledge, look at each chick, and spread a wing wide.
Pullets will fledge evenly all over their bodies, and have 2 distinct rows of flight feathers, one shorter & closer to the "arm" and one row of long flight feathers.
The cockeral fledge hap-hazardly, a little here, a little there, a tail feather yet the back remains bald but for fluff.
Spreading that wing and see if it is one row of feathers, no second row close to the "arm"

So this is what I do when to many chicks are running around, I get the spray bottle ful of hot water and go in only for the chicks and spray to get humidity back up. But I have a LG which I just pull up and grab fast if they are close, if they are in the back I leave them. So with that said wait till tomorrow and leave them unless you think they are in trouble... I also have chicks for you if you want one, or two or

I had to empty my incubator of egg shells and babies....just too many. I moved fast and I actually put a wet rag that I ran under warm water to get the humidity to come back fast. I like the spray bottle better though.

and all the new people I can't keep up with!

With all the new members here I thought I'd post this up and see if anyone wants to join in.

I live by Northgate Mall in Seattle and get my feed from Patriot Farms in Winlock. The feed is delivered for a fee per bag/bale to cover gas/time cost. If you would like to pick up feed at my place and have your birds enjoy semi-organic, locally grown, locally milled feed. Just let me know or fill out the order form below. This feed has been coined chicken crack by some here.

I've just gotten a delivery but if enough people want feed now I can work with Scott to get another delivery very soon.
Here is the Farm's website. http://patriotfarmandbison.com/
Here
is the Feed Order Form

Oh and just so everyone knows, this feed is a mash type not a crumble or pellet. If you have never used a fine blend like this it takes a little getting used to and in my case some feeder adjustments but once done your birdies will love you!

as long as your fast and don't open the bator to the world you should be fine pulling chicks out. I limit it to a minimum time of 2hrs between pulls. I hatch a lot of quails and they don't have the reserve of chicken chicks so have to go in the brooder as soon as fluffy. They are also very sensitive to lack of humidity.

One thing to note is I use a homemade wine cooler hatcher/bator. I use a large pan of water in the back with a aquarium air pump in the water. With this alone I get an even 50% humidity. If I add in a sponge I can get 70-80% and if I set the valve to the pump I can maintain 30-40% or 60-70%. So my case may be slightly skewed

Wowie zowie my thumb hurts, ow. I was going to go shopping after dinner but taking a shower convinced me I'd done enough today. I need a new power drill to finish the project (the old one is 13 and has had a hard, hard life): I realized after quitting for the day that the shaft is bent/chuck entirely out of alignment and a lot of my problems with the coop project was a result of the drill being wonky (it's not me being wonky: both kids were having problems, too). So, once again, Sears will own a little piece of my future in exchange for use of a worth-while tool.

I saw my cousin's chickens out free-ranging today; I wonder if that means they've gotten the coyote? I've been worried about them for years- not for cattle but I've lost two cats, and meanwhile the wild rabbits (or Southern Population Northern Snowshoe Hares, to be precise) have just taken a toll on the shrubs and wildflowers (camas, mostly) that I'm trying to establish, not to mention a few choice roses.

Here are some pictures of my babies. The Splash and Blue Wheaton are the ones I got from CL a few weeks ago. They have enjoyed the nice weather the last two days as much as I have! The babies out in the sun.

My EE cockerel, don't know how much longer I am going to keep him. But he is starting to get his hackle and saddle feathers in so I am kind of wanting to see what he is going to look like.

Just wanted to share, and post pics so CL could see that the babies I got from her are doing great!

Stumpfarmer Ya might want to check out Ryobi at HD. They are a very good cordless for the money. I bought mine 5 years ago for $39 and it is still going strong. I have also added the right angle and the recip saw. The next one I add will be the little circ.
