Kittymomma I do have an apron of wire 1 foot below the base of the coop - it will be backfilled with my lovely clay
hmm.png
soil and gravel and then rock - - the interior needs about 6-8 inches of backfilling done also - -

Not positively sure on what breeds I will have - - but am leaning toward the Wyandottes, Astralops , and possibly RIR - - I will have 3 sets of 2 hens - - am throwing in a pair of Golden Polish for fun! Don't tell my hubby - he says NO ROOSTERS!!! The neighbors have them - - how will he possibly notice the crow is coming from our property???

Your ducks are fantastic Rainplace but I can satisfy my duck fix @ work - we have Runners for herding - - (I own a grooming shop @ Fido's Farm in Lacey - - I am also an agility instructor there - it is a working sheep farm/herding - training facility)

Cute Aussie!!!! ~ ChickenRustler - - mine is a black-bi with prick ears also! "Better to NOT hear you with momma!"

Thanks for the head's up LaSombra - I might order from MPC as they have a good variety and ship in smaller #'s - - would love to have the BlueLaced Wy's but might have a hard time finding them - - my criteria - other than the Polish - are friendly and lay brown eggs~ ~ do you have a link for the guys in Glenoma?

rainierlass!!! From your neighbor to the far west.

You have indeed landed in friendly territory.

edited because I forgot to read the next page first.

My best egg layer right now is a NewHampshireRed named Fred. She also seems to be well mannered with the other chickens. They mature quickly, and are supposed to lay a long time.

But I wouldn't be without my green egg layers for anything. Also, you might look into Cuckoo Marens which MPC sells also. They generally lay a very dark egg.

WELCOME !!
You will learn alot from the people on here. I have:thumbsup One thing I had to learn on my own though was DON"T leave your flock out free ranging while you go inside to read Back yard chicken, when you have COYOTES in your woods . I lost my BEST layer (white leghorn) three weeks ago when I did that

Nice looking coop you have

.
I was going to ask the same questions as kittymomma
(1) how many chickens you getting?
(2) do you want meat birds, dual purpose birds or egg layers?

I went for egg layers. I have two of the following: (1) golden sexlink. (they lay a nice brown egg EVERY day) (2) Road Is. Reds ( they lay at least 6 out of 7 days) (3) White leghorns (an white egg a day, BUT very skidish, NOT a good pet) Then I have one Barred Rock ( cream color egg 6 out of 7 days) and a California White (a nice big white egg every day). The Calf. white is my Favorite, she is the MOST friendly. If I add to my flock this summer, I will get more Calf. whites. Not too many people on here have them. I like the mixture of brown and white eggs.

As you will see, everyone will give you their opinion and their favorites.

I looked at the book raising chickens for dummies. I didn't like it as.well as the First book I got called: "Chickens in your backyard" a beginners guide. By Rick & Gail Luttmann
I have gotten several since then. Look on Amazon.com . you can find used books in great shape for little $$

Here is their website: http://www.mzmfarm.net/

I've
got all three of those types of chickens. Love my wyandottes. One of my roosters is a buff wyandotte (the other is EE) and have a silver-laced hen and a gold-laced hen. I just have one australorp but she's very sweet. I have 2 RIR girls. They aren't especially sweet or anything, just there. I'd love to have some polish too!... and I plan on ordering from MYP this year also. I can't deal with the 25 chick minimum the other hatcheries have either. I'd be swamped with chickens! ...not that I wouldn't like to be anyway but you gotta have the husband on your side with that too

Rob
we can drop the HOT Chicks off at my place on the way back. its right on the way. We can have the coyotes watch them for you.
Kala is doing much, much better. on a scale of 1-10 I would give her an 8 1/2. she is back to chasing the chickens OFF the deck. so that is a very good sign . still not eating to much yet.
Kim is going to post some pictures for me when she gets time
Thanks for asking

I have 11 hens and one roo in the open coop complaining about the rain. 1 RIR hen playing happily in the mud. She has figured out that the rain brings out the worms, I think. They all look pitiful with their hackle feathers soaked and pointy and sticking out in all directions. It would make for some interesting and funny pictures. That would, however, require me to spend too much time out in the pouring rain. Maybe I can train Midge (RIR) to point and shoot.

Stay dry and/or warm everyone. Please send the Ark before February 28th to pull me out of the mud so I can attend the party
