Most rat poisons are safe for pets. The bait isn't really a poison. It is more of a blood thinner. It works because the rats and mice crawl through very small spaces, and that causes some bleeding, with the blood thinner there is no clotting of the blood and the rodents die.

You drive the rooster part way and deliver it to someone, say SadieSue. I meet Sadie Sue somewhere, and take it north Everett or Mt. Vernon, where someone else ( who was it up in Bellingham who was interested?) meets me and picks it up.

I thought it was somebody in Oroville?

Yep! I'm in Oroville! (I really have to remember to log off before I go to bed, lol!) I'm about 250 miles from Bellingham...

Don't count on it!!!!! We went and got feed the other day and Scott was trying to find them homes. He said they were so nice he really hated to see them go to camp so he was trying to rehome them.

You are just begining to see what a great bunch of people you are now a part of. BYCer's and ESPECIALLY the ones on the WA thread are some of the most caring helpful people you will ever know. Also if ya stick around there will be plenty of opportunities to meet some of us in person.

No, Red, you are correct, rat and mouse bait is NEVER safe for pets. Let me tell you as an emergency room veterinary technician, there is no such thing as a rat, mouse, gopher, slug, snail or mole bait that is safe for pets, even if it is labeled as such.

The rat and mouse baits that make the rodents bleed to death internally does the same thing to dogs and cats. It doesn't matter if they are "bruised" or not from crawling through small spaces, it will make them spontaneously bleed internally and they will die if not treated early enough.

The other type of rat and mouse bait (active ingredient is bromethalin) causes neurologic symptoms and does not affect clotting ability. Once a pet shows neuro symptoms from ingesting this type of rat bait there is nothing that can be done for them, it is not reversible like the anticoagulant type can be.

While we're on the subject, the slug bait that says "safe for pets" ISN'T. I don't know how many dogs our ER clinic has treated for ingesting that type of slug bait...

OK so I am not doubting you but just wonder ... HOW CAN THEY LABEL IT AS SUCH ???? I guess that probably goes with things like food that is labled "Gluten Free" but it is allowed to have a set small amount.

Or sugar free or ......

The active ingredient is iron phosphate, which is a naturally occurring ingredient. The attached article explains it in a lot more detail than I can. The interesting thing is that the dogs often present in the same state they do when exposed to the metaldehyde slug baits...they don't "look" like an iron toxicity.
