The active ingredient is iron phosphate, which is a naturally occurring ingredient. The attached article explains it in a lot more detail than I can. The interesting thing is that the dogs often present in the same state they do when exposed to the metaldehyde slug baits...they don't "look" like an iron toxicity.

My friends 250 lb lab ate a mouse that had eaten bait. He bled to death before she knew what was wrong with him. He died in her car on the way to the vet and he was screaming with pain poor guy.
On a happier note, our miracle chick is still kickin'! Way cool!
